I read Green Lantern back in the 1960s, and on and off since – especially since libraries started carrying ‘graphic novels’. As far as I am concerned, the film is an acceptable adaptation of the comic – especially considering the changes to continuity that DC has imposed over the decades. The basic origin was a faithful copy, and the fact that ‘without fear’ has been upgraded to ’able to face his fears and overcome them’ is merely upgrading what was a simple children’s story to a more acceptable adolescent level, and gave us a meaningful plot. The alien characters and planets looked alien thanks to the motion capture and CGI; the story held together reasonably well; this is a Hollywood film, after all. What more could you expect? It may not be dark Knight or Iron Man, but it is a first rate second rate film, and streets ahead of the Fantastic Four or the first Hulk film, at least to me.

The extended edition – as far as I could tell, this is basically some extra scenes of the childhood interaction of Hal, Carol and Hector, to give some backstory to their adult relationships. It feels as if they slow the pace of the film down, so don’t go spending money to upgrade.

The 3D Blu-Ray edition – I didn’t find the 3D effects added anything to my enjoyment of the film.

(Query - did they buy-in the Galactus effects from the Fantastic Four to reuse for Paralax?)

This really is not a bad film. After the amount of bashing this film got by the critics in the days before the film release i went in with very low expectations expecting one of the worst comic book film adaptions ever. To tell you this was an amazing film would be a lie but ryan reynolds is likable as Hal Jordon, and some of the sepcial effects are awesome. Some great action set pieces and decent humour. What more can you ask for from a super hero movie. This is no Iron Man but its decent for what it is. Do not let critics form your opinion of this film. The fact that transformers 3 made more money than this is a travesty. This is not the worst film of the summer and deserves more credit than it got.

This had got some bad reviews in the press. Consequently I came to this movie not expecting very much. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find that this was a decent superhero action movie after all. Ryan Reynolds gives a good performance here as the superhero. I can't understand all the negativity.

A Green Lantern, fleeing the evil Parallax, crash lands on Earth. Dying, he offers his green power ring to Hal Jordan. Or more correctly, it is the ring that chooses Jordan, an earthling with ego and confidence problems. The green power is said to derive from the Will of the beings in the universe. It is contrasted with a yellow power involving Fear, the other power in the Universe.

Like many newbie heroes, Hal initially is not enamoured with the deal that is offered him.......

One amusing moment is when Hal, now a Green Lantern, appears before his girlfriend. Let's face it, his pithy mask isn't really much of a disguise is it? And she recognises him immediately. I thought that bit of realism was a nice touch. So much for the superhero infallibility myth!

Parallax, the main (computer generated) villain in this film is rather a disappointment.

This movie has a lot of special effects. Take a look at the amount of credits rolling at the end. There are truckloads of them.

If you have kids who are into comic superheroes then they will love this film and give it 5 stars. Bigger kids like myself will give it 3.5 stars and wonder what all the negativity is about. For a standard DVD currently retailing on Amazon at a price of just £3, how can you go wrong?

The Green Lantern, as a film was visually stunning, enjoyable to watch, funny and comedic in places - yet lacking a certain something in others.

As far as Super Hero movies go, I'm not a massive fan. They're OK but they're not really my thing and, of the ones I've seen, some I've enjoyed - others not.

My point being, other than the latest Batman films, I've had no burning desire to see a Marvel or DC inspired film (although I have seen them all). That was until I saw the trailers for The Green Lantern.

Something about them intrigued me and drew me in. Basically, I think it was 'the look' of the film and the special effect sequences, and I wasn't disappointed.

The film is visually stunning and the SFX are equally incredible and pleasurable to watch but the story just wasn't that exciting to me. I'm not sure why, because it was a pretty solid story, plausible (in a comic book sort of way) and well written.

I think perhaps it was just little too linear and straight forward. Other parts of the film weren't though, and it has to feature one of the best 'villains' - or rather, Evil Enitities - I've ever seen. And it's really moments like baddy that save this film.

This is a film based on special effects and if you took all the razzmatazz and razzle-dazzle away there wouldn't be much left to hold your attention. That said, there was some nice ideas and writing in the script, but it just lacked that 'big idea' for the main arc.

The cast was strong (literally in fact, with Mark Strong in one of the main roles) and the acting solid throughout. There was an incredibly beautiful leading lady and a good mix of characters. Overall, it gets a B-. Frustratingly capable of more.
