This really is not a bad film. After the amount of bashing this film got by the critics in the days before the film release i went in with very low expectations expecting one of the worst comic book film adaptions ever. To tell you this was an amazing film would be a lie but ryan reynolds is likable as Hal Jordon, and some of the sepcial effects are awesome. Some great action set pieces and decent humour. What more can you ask for from a super hero movie. This is no Iron Man but its decent for what it is. Do not let critics form your opinion of this film. The fact that transformers 3 made more money than this is a travesty. This is not the worst film of the summer and deserves more credit than it got.

Don't believe the anti-hype: it's the domino effect of criticism, one reviewer follows another until nobody feels free to have an original opinion about a movie. Green Lantern is a thoroughly enjoyable summer blockbuster; it has its flaws, but nobody should be going in expecting a tight Shakespearean plot with tragic irony and profound soliloquies. The script is more than serviceable, the acting far better than the likes of Transformers or Thor, and the plight of the central character one that we can all relate to. Give this movie a chance. It will surprise you.

This had got some bad reviews in the press. Consequently I came to this movie not expecting very much. I was therefore pleasantly surprised to find that this was a decent superhero action movie after all. Ryan Reynolds gives a good performance here as the superhero. I can't understand all the negativity.

A Green Lantern, fleeing the evil Parallax, crash lands on Earth. Dying, he offers his green power ring to Hal Jordan. Or more correctly, it is the ring that chooses Jordan, an earthling with ego and confidence problems. The green power is said to derive from the Will of the beings in the universe. It is contrasted with a yellow power involving Fear, the other power in the Universe.

Like many newbie heroes, Hal initially is not enamoured with the deal that is offered him.......

One amusing moment is when Hal, now a Green Lantern, appears before his girlfriend. Let's face it, his pithy mask isn't really much of a disguise is it? And she recognises him immediately. I thought that bit of realism was a nice touch. So much for the superhero infallibility myth!

Parallax, the main (computer generated) villain in this film is rather a disappointment.

This movie has a lot of special effects. Take a look at the amount of credits rolling at the end. There are truckloads of them.

If you have kids who are into comic superheroes then they will love this film and give it 5 stars. Bigger kids like myself will give it 3.5 stars and wonder what all the negativity is about. For a standard DVD currently retailing on Amazon at a price of just £3, how can you go wrong?

Green Lantern.
Region 2 dvd.
Ratio 16.9/2.40:1.
Running time 110 minutes approx.

Positives
Well at leasts this comic book movie attempts to try something new.
Mark Strong is on good form playng Sinestro.
Ryan Reynolds plays Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan but is actually ok in this movie.

Negative.
Martin Campbell is usually a superb director of action & storytelling but is a little out of his depth here in this comic book movie realm.
Some of the CGI is appalling in places especially the main villian Parallax.

Review.
Oh dear you wait for DC to release a comic book movie with exeption to Batman, Dark Knight & this is what we finally get a jumbled poor CGI mess.

Green Lantern is less known in the UK but with a director attached of Martin Campbell calibre i expected a lot more than the end result.

Ryan Reynolds plays Ryan Reynolds playing Hal Jordon a test pilot whom still suffers flashbacks seeing his father's death in a jet crash.

Hal is a cocky pilot but has low self esteem issues & seems afraid of comitting to his on/off Girlfriend Carol Ferris(Blake Lively) or just about anything in his life.

In the universe a creature of great power known as Parallax escapes from his exile & attacks his former capturer Abin Sur who many years ago abandoned him on the lost sector planet Ryut.

Parallax attack against Abin Sur mortally wounds him & he crashes to earth & by fate is found by Hal who passes on his Green Power Ring & Lantern tells him to recite the oath & then dies.

Hal eventually recites the oath thinking it a joke but becomes possessed by the rings power.

Format: DVD
The movie starts with a CG background science fiction origins of Green Lantern. The power of the Green Lantern is given to those who do not know fear. Parallax is introduced as the evil force which is "fear." As a Green Lantern lays crashed he releases his Green Lantern ring (force) to someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word "fear." Clearly that is Hal Jordon (Ryan Reynolds) who thinks he is Tom Cruise in "Top Gun" as he defeats 2 High tech pilot-less air craft by using a maneuver from Ironman.

The movie spends a lot of time building background and lays the foundation for a multiple sequels. This is mostly an introduction of the character.

While the Green Lantern is flying around impressing his former gf, mad scientist and son of a senator, Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) has been experimenting by injecting himself with microbes, which happen to be alien, creating the super villain for our super hero. They spent a ton of money on special effects. The ring may never make a mistake, but the casting director did. They should have gone the extra expense to get some real box office stars. Ryan Reynolds didn't hack it.

No sex, no nudity, and no F-bombs. Good for kids.
