Product Description

Product Description

This work asserts the belief that the power of design can influence a more responsible approach to our threatened environment. It shows how everyone, from those at the forefront of design to the consumers, can contribute to the well-being of the planet through an awareness of design and technology. The book explores a more spiritually-satisfying approach to design - designing for need, not greed. It also includes examples from all areas of design, from packaging and product design to large-scale architecture. Practical advice and checklists for the consumer on selecting and buying, using and re-using is also featured.

2.0 out of 5 stars This book does not live up to my expectations., 2 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Green Imperative: Ecology and Ethics in Design and Architecture (Paperback)
Although his heart is in the right place, Victor Papanek's latest book does not read convincingly and does not live up to the high standards of his seminal work Design for the Real World. The Green Imperative unfortunately includes significant errors for example the diagram on p94 (Thames and Hudson paperback edition) purporting to show how to determine the golden rectangle, is incorrect. However, the book does cover a wide range of topics and concepts which are highly relevant to ecology and ethics in design and architecture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Designer's Must Read, 26 Dec 2000
By cincywalker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Green Imperative: Ecology and Ethics in Design and Architecture (Paperback)
As a design student, I found this to be among the best design titles I have read to date. The book is inspiring, offering practical suggestions for adding sustainable principles to any design project. It is also eye-opening, exposing readers to successful design from a myriad of cultures. Papanak also explores the benefits of design education for everyone, and provides examples of successful design for every point he brings up. Every page seems to inspire a new design idea. This title is a must for every designer and design student.

It is a great book which can give every designer, from a student to an expert, understanding natural-enviromental design examples and concepts.
