Book Description

21 Jun 2013
Gwen Jones, a young Welsh writer, is desperate to save the family farmhouse from being sold from under her critically ill mother and herself. When she lands a lucrative three-book deal with an eminent publisher, she thinks her problems are all over. However, Gwen's need to be near her sick mother means she’s unable to travel to London to work with her devilishly desirable editor, John Thatcher, and he must come and stay with her in Wales. Handsome and eminently capable, cosmopolitan John is used to getting his own way and has plans for the future which certainly don’t include being distracted by pretty Welsh girls; nevertheless when he journeys into the country to work with Gwen it’s not long before he finds himself falling in love with her, as well as the house she’s so anxious to save. But is John capable of loving anyone as much as his job? And when he has to decide between his goals and Gwen, which will he choose? 'The Green Hills of Home' - a sweet heart warming tale of duty, devotion and love.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Heart Warming Romance 17 Sep 2013
By Lincs Reader TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
A heart-warming and sweet romance, this is an enchanting little story following the tried and tested tradition of boy meets girl, they overcome many obstacles in their way, they fall in love.

Although the story centres around the two main characters of Gwen and John, I felt that the real stars of this novel were the Welsh setting and Gwen's wonderful dog Oscar! Gwen is an aspiring author, living in Wales with her mother in the house that she grew up in, she works shifts in the local tea-room in between penning her novel. John is an editor, he is focussed on his work, more at home in the City than in the country and determined that he will not be swayed by his feelings for Gwen. Gwen desperately needs this book deal, her home is about to be sold, her mother is in hospital after having a stroke, she feels responsible and carries a heavy burden on her shoulders.

As Gwen and John start to work together on her book, their relationship gradually changes. John begins to enjoy the solitude of the beautiful Welsh countryside, walking the dog and becoming part of the small community. Gwen realises that she doesn't have to be quite so independent, that there is the possibility that she may not have to shoulder all of her burdens alone.

This is the sort of story that is perfect for either reading in the sunshine, with a glass of something cool to accompany it, or alternatively tucked up on the sofa with a mug of tea and a packet of biscuits. It's a get-away-from-it-all, feel good novel will raise the spirits and leave the reader with a warm feeling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great debut 31 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The story follows Gwen, who has just landed a three book deal with a big London publisher. Handsome editor John turns her life upside down as he tries to help her perfect her debut novel, especially when he turns up at her country home in Wales to start work. Gwen has to contend with John's moods but also with her mother's illness and the battle to save their beloved family home.

This is Emma's debut novel. I had seen it on amazon before got in touch with me and I was immediately drawn to its cover. The colours are eye catching and with the two main characters caught in a romantic clinch on the front cover it looked every bit the perfect romance novel.

Gwen is a good main character and is easy to like and understand her point of view. She is young but has an awful lot of responsibility thrust upon her, especially when it comes to trying to raise enough money to save her childhood home. She is down to earth, which makes her easy to like, and she very defensive of her life as it is which is commendable.

John, on the other hand, was not as easy to like at first going from white knight to grouchy workaholic in a matter of pages. His grumpy demeanour and attitude to Gwen's hectic family commitments make him almost insufferable. Part of the story is told from his point of view though which redeems his character because it shows how his feelings towards Gwen develop.

The plot appears to unfold easily around the characters; however Emma has thrown in a few twists which will keep you hooked to the end.

One thing I noticed when I had finished reading this was that it didn't feel like I was reading someone's debut novel, instead I felt like I was reading an established author who knew her characters well and knew exactly what path they were going to take in the story. I'm looking forward to whatever is next from Emma.

Gwen wins a publishing contract in London and returns to her cottage in Wales and her devoted dog Oscar. Then her world is turned upside down when her disturbingly handsome editor comes to stay to work on her book. Meanwhile, she struggles to find a mortgage to buy her home, which is to be auctioned, and to care for her hospitalised mother. A lovely story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful light romance for the month of love 13 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
The author gave me a copy for my honest review. I have to say I really liked this one. It's a light romance with plenty of falling in love moments.
The Green Hills of of Home is Emma Bennet's debut Novel and I think she's done a wonderful and amazing job. She capture you in the first pages with her characters and their circumstances and I've got to say that I really connect to Gwen as I'm an author myself. Her emotions and feelings were dead on. I think she had done a wonderful job with Gwen and not to mention the heart throb editor. What we authors wouldn't do to land an editor like John Thatcher.
Gwen's dog Oscar is really playing a very important role in this novel and everyone will fall in love with him and how he changes John.

I love romance but I hate the type of novels that just jump with one another into bed without even knowing who the other person is. Emma didn't do it here. Half way through the novel there isn't even any mention of falling in love etc and when it did happened it was so much more magical.
I appreciate the fact that Emma chose to do it that way. We got a chance to fall in love with Gwen and John and that says a lot.
I would recommend this novel to every one that loves a good light romance.
Nice Job Emma and good luck with your writing career.
