I found this novel highly enjoyable - it seems to be one of those books that is unforgettable and will stay in your mind with a warm glow for a long time after you've read it.

It's also a distinctly original novel - I guess it could be categorized as 'philosophical fiction' - because there's a lot more to it than meets the eye - as you gradually realise, to your delight, when you're a few chapters in... you suddenly get the feeling that underneath this gentle, authentic and engaging story there is an even deeper level of meaning going on. Green Eros is not only a highly intelligent human love story, it's a fictionalised journey into the philosophy of love. It is enchanting following Juniper, the novel's young philosopher-protagonist, as he plunges headlong into a twisting, turning adventure through different philosophical - and cultural, evolutionary and even biological - angles on love... until finally he discovers.... hmm well that would be giving too much away I guess! ...But after reading Green Eros I feel like I finally 'get' the real meaning of love and friendship, in a way I never really understood them before. This is my favourite aspect of the whole book.

The other things I enjoyed very much about Green Eros were its idiosyncratically human characters (I have not met such lovably unforgettable characters since reading 'A Confederacy of Dunces' years ago!), its startlingly poetic, vivid imagery (which for me made the novel feel strongly atmospheric), the quirky dialogue, and the great dead-pan moments of comedy sublimely sprinkled through the book. I find understated humour very delicious and the author of Green Eros has a definite gift for it methinks!!Read more ›
