Review
`Breathtaking ... A long vista of undulating story, with here and there peaks of volcanic excitement.' --The Daily Telegraph

Product Description
First published in 1944, 'Green Dolphin Country' is a magnificent epic of love, courage and selfless devotion, set in the Channel Islands and New Zealand in the nineteenth century, written with Elizabeth Goudge's inimitable feeling for the intricacies of human emotions. Though the book is fiction, and the characters not portraits, it is based on fact. A stunning tale of loss and self-sacrifice, it is truly one of the most memorable love stories of the last century.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and unusual love story, 14 Mar 2001
By A Customer
I picked up this book second hand... It's the story of 2 very different sisters-the beautiful and joyful Marguerite, and the stubborn and intelligent Marianne, who both fall in love with the same man. He has gone to New Zealand--the book is set in the 1800s--and he writes home to ask to marry the sister he loves, but in a drunken state, puts down the wrong name. When she arrives she has to deal with the hardships of life there, while he tries to come to terms with his mistake, and the fact that the sister he loves has entered a convent. Sounds melodramatic, but it's not, and there are lots of evocative descriptions. Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars FINDING A BOOK I READ 40 YEARS AGO, 25 Nov 2005
By Mrs. G. R. Baldwin (Spalding LIncolnshire UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Green Dolphin Country (Hardcover)
I first read Green Dolphin Country about forty years ago. I loved it so much, that I re-read it several times, until my paperback copy fell to pieces. Sadly it is now out of print, but thanks to a market place seller I can now enjoy the story again. The story is of two sisters who both love the same man. He loves one sister, but because of a mix up with their names he marries the other. It is an adventure set in Victorian times of a woman travelling from her home in Guernsey to New Zealand to be with the man she loves and finding great happiness and sorrow, and finally forgiveness when she is re-united with her sister many years later. The details of New Zealand are not very realistic, but it's a great read anyway
