Book Description

April 1998 0852883773 978-0852883778 7th Revised edition
Greek Waters Pilot is the definitive cruising guide to the coasts and islands of Greece. It covers the entire area from the Ionian Islands to the Aegean, Rhodes and Crete and includes details of over 450 harbours in a single volume. Greek Waters Pilot has been painstakingly compiled from the author's own survey work and the latest first hand information. This tenth edition coincides with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the launch of the original Greek Waters Pilot. As with each preceding edition this one includes further updating and improvement. Between 2005 and 2007 Rod Heikell and his wife Lu revisited much of the Ionian, Saronic and Dodecanese in their present yacht, Skylax, picking up new information, additional photographs and updated plans. The organization of detail within the confines of a single volume is an impressive achievement and has been the basis of Greek Waters Pilots' status as the indispensable guide for anyone sailing around Greece.

More About the Author

Rod Heikell was born in New Zealand in 1949 and sailed hesitantly around bits of it's coast in a variety of yachts. He tried racing in the Hauraki Gulf but was really not much good at it. In England he abandoned academic life and for no good reason other than curiosity, he bought Roulette, a 1950's plywood JOG yacht nearly 20ft long, and sailed it down to the Mediterranean. He worked on charter here and delivered yachts until, in ignorance of the scale of the task, he set off to write a yachtsman's guide to Greece. This was followed by guides for other countries in the Mediterranean. He has sailed back and forth between England and the Mediterranean including a trip down the Danube and on to Turkey in Rosinante, an 18ft Mirror Offshore. In 1996 he took his fourth yacht, his beloved Tetra, to SE Asia and back for the research for Indian Ocean Cruising Guide. Apart from sailing the 'wrong' way and back again the 'right' way across the Indian Ocean in Tetranora, his beloved 31ft Cheverton New Campaigner, he has done two transatlantics in seven tenths and two transatlantics on Skylax, his present yacht. He has also cruised extensively in other parts of the world on other yachts. Skylax is now back in the Mediterranean after her circumnavigation being readied for new adventures. He always returns to the Mediterranean, his favourite cruising grounds, where with his wife Lu he updates his guides on the area.

His latest books are The Trade Wind Foodie and The Accidental Sailor.

Some of these books have been translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Turkish.

Also edits the Imray-Tetra chart series for the eastern Mediterranean.

Articles have appeared in Yachting World, Yachting Monthly, Practical Boat Owner, Sailing Today, Yacht, Sail, and other magazines.

4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive cruising guide to Greek Waters 13 Jun 2004
Rod Heikell's guides are seen as the definitive guides to sailing (cruising) in Greek waters.
Ports, harbours and marinas are clearly and accurately described and the diagrams are clear and easy to follow. We sailed recently in Greece and along with the Imray chart, this guide formed all the information you are likely to need.
My one complaint is that co-ordinates are not given for the ports, harbours, marinas and other points of interest such as quiet anchorages and bays. To input these into the GPS meant going back to the chart, where it would have been so much easier to be able to lift them straight from the guide. Hopefully this will be fixed in later editions. Otherwise an essential guide to anyone wanting to cruise the waters around Greece.

3.0 out of 5 stars . 27 Aug 2009
The book was reasonably helpful as we sailed around that area, but it is in need off updating as some of the information is way out of date and improvements had been made

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good, very heavy 19 Nov 2010
Very accurate, good comments, answered all my nautical questions. It would be even better if they published it as an e-book so one could look up everything on the laptop.
