Review

Entertaining and enjoyable, a quick and informative read, with graphs and maps that allow the reader to grasp the finesse of ancient conflict. --Armchair General (online), June 2007

In researching this remarkable work the noted author surveyed almost 700 battles and sieges in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds up to 31 BC. In determining why various protagonists were victorious, the writer highlights why certain factors or elements prevailed at the time. The first part of the book shows the author's great depth of knowledge of the subject and his painstaking analysis. The second part of the work deals with tactics in battle. Twenty battles (most with supporting diagrams) are discussed in some detail along with a background briefing and a concluding thematic summary. Armed then with such information, the armchair theorist or wargamer should be able to argue like an expert about such battles as Cannae, Zama, Magnesia or Pharsalus. The classical writers of antiquity, e.g. Livy and Xenophon (and many others for that matter) have been analysed and the results are here for you to enjoy, thanks to the painstaking research and writing skills of the redoubtable John Drogo Montagu. --- Sid Wigzell

Product Description

Greek and Roman Warfare: Battles, Tactics and Trickery is a uniquely detailed work which explores the tactics and battle strategies of the Graeco-Roman period. This incisive study goes beyond the arms and armour to reveal the psychology behind history's most emblematic battles. The technology of an army is of course an important factor in its success, but battles are ultimately won by tactics and strategy. From the cunning ambush to oxen with torches masquerading as an escaping army at night, Drogo Montagu explores the intricacies of waging war in the ancient world. Using his extensive knowledge of Graeco-Roman military history, he has created a gripping account of classical military thought. Montagu draws on the great historians of the time Livy, Plutarch, Xenophon and Josephus among them to illustrate the different elements that an army required to defeat its enemy on the battlefield, be it by force or guile. In addition, he offers details on how a commander would maintain the morale and fitness of his troops, as well as conduct their training. Greek and Roman Warfare provides an incredibly thorough view of the tactics and strategy of battle in ancient times from all perspectives, making it one of the most complete studies of Graeco-Roman warfare to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting on/off read, 2 Feb 2012

This review is from: Greek and Roman Warfare: Battle, Tactics and Trickery (Hardcover)
I quite like the book and it's structure; part I regarding elements that influence battles, and part II example narratives of battles and what happened at them, with a thematic summary of each.

You can pick it up read a little and then leave it for a day or so quite easily.

I've spotted one mistake, whilst discussing the Hydaspes in 326 BCE, between the Alexandrian Macedonians and Porus' Indians Montagu mentions casualties "On the Roman side" and again "losses among the Roman infantry". A glaringly bad error.
Still the book is quite good for the general reader.

I am truly shocked that such an interesting subject can be made so dull! I didn't expect a Captain Underpants style book, but this guy brings boring to whole new level!

3.0 out of 5 stars beginners guide to ancient warfare, 8 Feb 2007
By Dr. Andrew Grimsdale - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Greek and Roman Warfare: Battle, Tactics and Trickery (Hardcover)
This book gives a general overview of the factors leading to sucess on the ancient battlefield, followed by thumbnail sketches of a number of importnat battles illustrating it. It will be of interest to people who are interested in ancient warfare but not particularly well-read on it. People who have read more about the subject will find it a bit simplistic. Not a bad book but probably best for those just starting to get interested in the field.
