Product Description

Originally published in paper as Home from the Party.

From the Back Cover:

When a key player and high roller in a game of sinister political deals is murdered, Athens sends out Captain Kosta Konstantinou, a Canadian-educated idealist, to investigate. But nothing could have prepared him for the island of Nostos. What he finds among the artists, celebrities, pushers and gigolos is a tangle of connections—with the former dictatorship, with the CIA and with each other. This is a vivid evocation of Greece after the fall of the Colonels, of the struggle of Papandreou’s followers to assume power, and of foreign bohemians in an island paradise. Through parties and police files, truth serum and séances, Kosta stalks his killer—in the growing knowledge that he must succeed if he is to save the new order, and himself.

“In Home from the Party MacLean has created a fast-paced, witty novel that pushes the murder mystery in exciting new directions.”—Keith Maillard

“This is a most entertaining and satirical tale in which black humour and farce are brought together with real acuity.”—Reference West (Vancouver)

“Considering the price and scarcity of potable water on an island suspiciously like Hydra, the discovery of a beautiful teenage corpse floating in a cistern is no laughing matter. But almost everything else is lively and fun in this mystery of political intrigue and sexual abundance in the Argosaronic.”—The Athenian

“Home from the Party is a slow-fused but explosive thriller set on an imaginary Greek island, presented in all its artsy glamour and glittering corruption….if you like epigrams, knowing insights into failed relationships, evocations of la dolce vita, Hydra-style, this is for you. MacLean…has published a previous novel, Foreign Matter, with Atheneum Press, New York. Although Foreign Matter was very well received, Home from the Party suggests that MacLean would be well-advised to undertake a series of mystery novels, using ‘Captain Costa’ and the Greek setting he evokes here with such skill and obvious joy.”—Edward Winston

“Featuring his usual comic touches, the book manages to skillfully intertwine a murder, a Greek investigator, showbiz celebrities, drug dealers, artists, gigolos, the CIA and the junta, in a fast-paced, entertaining web of entangled connections.”—Angelika Timms, Athens Week

“MacLean is able to develop an interesting combination of characters in his novel. Each character is displayed with his/her own unique style and Konstantinou’s adventures are different and very funny.”—Rosanne Papadopoulos, Greek News Weekly

“Home from the Party is a fast-paced murder mystery laced with humor.”—The Athens News

“The roller-coaster ride begins!”—Chris Maverick, Greek News Weekly

2.0 out of 5 stars not for me 20 May 2013

I struggled to read this book. Yes it gives you wonderful descriptions of how Greeks thought in the 80s and the political situation but as a crime novel it was an inept detective fumbling around in a situation way above his pay grade. There was little detecting done, just an insular group of foreigners talking about each other. I thought it was boring and the characters extremely uninteresting. To me it was a study of Greece in the 80s with a couple of murders flung in to link the narrative.

Set on a chic Greek island, this is a wonderful mystery-novel, filled with twists and turns which keep you guessing till the very end. Whats more it is totally authentic - giving readers a taste of the Greek reality of it's time and place. I think this story would make an excellent film.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully written mystery 4 Dec 2012

Greek Island Murder is a fascinating mystery set on the Greek islands. I can tell that Mr. MacLean lives in Greece because the settings are authentically written. He brings the sights, scents, sounds, and tactile sensations of the Greek culture to life. The book is also written beautifully, with tight prose, and characters that are unique and alive.
I highly recommend this book by Mr. MacLean!
Kindest regards

2.0 out of 5 stars Just didn't work for me. 18 July 2012

I didn't care much for the style. Too many supporting characters -- too many characters overall. Not enough narrative to explain the relevant recent Greek history and politics. Good local color, though. There were many sections where I lost interest entirely, with just a few hints of something better to come.

The third act was where things finally got good, but it ended too abruptly with no payoff.
