Review

"'... the most useful and enjoyable book on El Greco in English - or, for that matter, in any language.' Brian Sewell, Evening Standard; '... this is a beautiful book, with well-written text, a first-rate chronology and gorgeous reproductions.' The Art Book; '... splendidly produced with excellent illustrations.' Burlington Magazine" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

El Greco (1541-1614), born Domenikos Theotokopoulos, was one of the most fascinating and distinctive artists of the sixteenth century. His works are immediately recognisable for their brilliant colours, elongated figures and spiritual intensity. Initially trained in Crete, in around 1567 El Greco moved to Italy where he purportedly studied with Titian. A decade later he is documented in Toledo (south of Madrid), and he spent the rest of his long life in Spain. His paintings and writings offer a thoughtful, frequently inspired response to the varied environments in which he worked - and they reveal that he was deeply engaged with the religious and artistic thinking of his time. This lavishly illustrated book - the first comprehensive English-language publication on El Greco in many years - address the full range of the artist's work in painting and sculpture, from his Byzantine icons to his late altarpieces. It considers his personality from both a religious and intellectual point of view, and presents the artist's religious, mythological, genre, landscape and portrait works, providing the historical context in which they were made. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A very nice introduction to El Greco, beautifully illustrated, and informative. If you want more detail, though, you should look to something else, but this is a good little publication.

Brief and satisfying 29 July 2009
By Artsreadings TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is a very nice album about a great modern European artist.

Bray's explanations about El Greco are crystal-clear and very engaging, with the narrative of the artist's life, and also close visual analysis of many works of the artists, all reproduced in full colour along the text.

This is complemented by a very useful chronology and few bibliographical suggestions for any reader who wants more detailed information about El Greco.

A must if you are a bit in a hurry or just want an introduction to the artist, without entering into too much detail, but nonetheless with giving you a satisfying overview of his life and work.

El Greco-The National Gallery 20 Aug 2004
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is a marvel. The full color pictures of the View of

Toledo, The Crucifixion, The Martyr of Saint Maurice and the

Baptism of Christ are worth the price paid. The text describes

how the Latin West, Eastern Orthodox-Greek and Islam coexisted

in the 16th century. This book would be perfect for historians,

artists, cultural enthusiasts and a wide constituency of

scholars in almost every area of formal academe.

A Beautiful Collection 1 Jan 2004
By Eve Nevarre - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It is about time that a book come out on the brillian artist that is Domenikos Theonopolis! Ever since I visited Spain in 1994 I have been an avid fan of El Greco but sadly have been unable to find any books on him until now. This is a wonderful book celebrating the prolific works of this genius. It is a beautiful collection full of amazingly colored images and information about El Greco. Whether an avid fan or just wanting to learn more about this artist, this book is an excellent resource.

The other reviews cover the text, so I will answer the one question you can never know when buying an art book online- are the reproductions good? Yes, they are terrific.
