Book Description

Morse had solved so many mysteries in his life. Was he now, he wondered beginning to glimpse the solution to the greatest mystery of them all . . . ? How can the discovery of a short story by a beautiful Oxford graduate lead Chief Inspector Morse to her murderer? What awaits Morse and Lewis in Room 231 of the Randolph Hotel? Why does a theft at Christmas lead the detective to look upon the festive season with uncharacteristic goodwill? And what happens when Morse himself falls victim to a brilliantly executed crime? This dazzling collection of short stories from Inspector Morse’s creator, Colin Dexter, includes six ingenious cases for the world’s most popular fictional detective – plus five other tantalizingly original tales to delight all lovers of classic crime fiction.

A book of 11 short stories, ranging from 5 to 30 minutes reading time. All compelling reading, thought provoking. All reminders of cryptic crossword clues, double bluffs, mystery and intrigue. Not all the stories feature Morse. Morse's greatest mystery is the one story with the least criminal and detective content. The story subjects include fabricating evidence, theft, escape from prison, impersonation, infidelity and murder. A likable book, worth reading, recommended for holidays or train journeys. The first Colin Dexter I've read it reminded me of Ian McEwan but not so macabre.

good to dip into 16 Dec 2011

This is a compilation of short stories - not all with the involvement of DCI Endeavour Morse. As expected with Colin Dexter, they are all clever, with a twist in the tail (tale?). As the stories are quite short - 25 pages or so - the book is good to dip into. Highly recommended for all Morse - and Dexter - fans.
