Wilson Phillips. Such a great group from early 1990's, whose first album was extremely successful. Their tracks are beautifully harmonised and I am excited to discover this greatest hits. All the single versions are 'slightly' different to the album versions, so if you love these tracks, then it is worth buying the CD for the subtle changes. They are best when they sing their melancholic tracks (Release Me, You're In Love, You Won't See Me Cry), and they have supplied a couple of their solo tracks at the end (I particularly like Chynnas 'Naked and Sacred'). I have marked the album down because it included an interview. If they 'have' to do that, at least put it at the end! But full marks for the musical content. And 'Flesh and Bloode was never a Uk single, so a new mix for us. Their live version of Hotel California is also excellent and worth having if you don't own this (originally came as a b-side), and I also like their cover of the Elton John classic 'Daniel'. A thoroughly enjoyable album.

I remembered Wilson Philips from when I was a kid. I never got round to buying their stuff back then and I was lucky to come across this CD. Great stuff, their best and material we never got to hear in the UK. I rate Wilson Philips quite highly and they are a group with more than just looks. They have substance, they have talent and that is more than what I can say about the current crop of pop acts. Radio stations don't play Wilson Philips anymore, so buy this CD, grab your partner and enjoy.

Wonderful harmonies 24 Nov 2006
By TSD
Format:Audio CD
A few years ago I can remember hearing a song being played on the radio and thinking that's nice I wonder who it is? I heard it several times more but of course doing what DJs do best and never telling you the artist (how annoying is that?) I failed to find out who it was. Anyway, something reminded me of the song recently and I managed to work out it was by Wilson Phillips so I was glad to see this greatest hits album available.

After a first very brief listen to some of the tracks on this compilation my initial thought was how very American MOTR pop. Musical production is typically generic of the time. However, after a second proper listen what was very apparent and stood out was the striking three part harmony. The girls voices really do blend together into a quite unique sound, it's really rather lovely, beautiful in fact. It's these distinctive harmonies which really make the songs.

Apparently the first song "Hold On" is their best selling single. To me it kinda sounds familiar but I don't really remember it that well. It's uplifting and not too bad at all. For me the next two songs are the best ("You're in Love" being the song I heard on the radio back then) and both have great bittersweet melodies. If you like melody you'll love these two songs. The rest of the songs are fine, not great, but generally not too bad. The last two tracks which are sung only by the two Wilson sisters with dad Brian chipping in I find to be the most musically interesting with "Miracle" being produced by Dave Stewart. The harmony by the two girls is very good but they miss Chynna (who also has a solo track "Naked and Sacred"). It's when the three of them are together that they really shine.

Anyway, I think this album is worth three and a half stars because there just aren't enough real hits on it. We don't do halves so I'll be generous and give it four for the great harmonies. Glad they have got back together again more recently. I really hope they can come up with some good new material.
