Product Description

Gloria Estefan's been doing Latin pop since Jennifer Lopez was in junior high, but she's progressed little, evidenced from the derivative dance and disco retreads on her Greatest Hits Vol. II. Apart from a few true gems such as "Reach" and "Heavens What I Feel", the album is a boring mix of covers ("Turn the Beat Around", "Everlasting Love") and original tracks that blend into one another, all Cuban rhythm and banal lost-love lyrics. Gloria has a one-of-a-kind voice and great style--she's a sure-fire talent, and in her native language, her music is still fabulous (check out Mi Tierra or Abriendo Puertas). But if you're looking for a real sampler of her greatest hits, the first volume, released in 1992, is still the way to go. --Courtney Kemp

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the Best... 7 Mar 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Gloria's first greatest hits collection flowed like the river wild, an incredibly enjoyable mix of emotional and heartfelt pop balads and Miami club scene dance songs akin to having special access to the best radio station in the world.
Her second collection of greatest hits reflects the change in radio and the integrity of Gloria and Emilio to the music. As hip-hop and rap began getting more and more airplay, Gloria continued to make great music, finding other venues like films and the Olympics to augment the occasional dance club hit or beautiful ballad.
This makes for an eclectic mix of great individual songs, but without the easy flow of the first collection. This caught some critics, who were expecting a repeat performance, off guard, and caused them to compare the two unfairly and dismiss this one as inferior. I've owned this since the day it was released and can honestly say they were wrong.
There are some wonderful songs here, including three new ones recorded as a bonus. At first, it was the kind of CD I would pop in for a few selected songs. Over time, however, in spite of its eclectic nature, I found myself leaving it on and letting it play through. The flow of this second collection lies in the high quality production given these hits. The same perfection of Gloria's more artistic Latin efforts such as Mi Tierra and Alma Caribena can be found here, each song framed by Emilio's attention to detail. The musical quality of this collection is its flow.
1) Turn the Beat Around (Classic Mix) -- This is Gloria's 'cover' of Vicki Sue Robinson's disco classic. A lively and fun blast from the past.
2) Everlasting Love -- Taken from Gloria's album of 'covers' for songs she grew up with, this is a smoothly produced minutes of pure nostalgia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Radio Favorites, and some new Treats as well 24 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This collection chronicles Gloria Estefan's singles from the '90s - many of which are still in heavy rotation on Pop Radio today. She begins by turning on the Heat with Her Action Packed cover of Vickie Sue Robinson's Classic Dance number,TURN THE BEAT AROUND. This is truly wonderful version.... If anything, there is even MORE Beat to turn around here than there was in the Song's Disco hay day - the production is perfect, and Gloria's Silky Sensual Voice is the Sweet icing on an already delicious cake! The Album hits a bit of a speed bump with the next tune - a rather pedestrian, and vastly overproduced version of EVERLASTING LOVE. Where TURN THE BEAT AROUND is a shining example of what was GOOD about Disco - this take on EVERLASTING is the polar opposite, Gloria does what She can to salvage it, but is overwhelmed by the cheesy '70s "Love boat" style over blown Orchestration. Personally, I would have much prefered they left this one on the cutting room floor and put on Her Brilliant rendtion of Carole King's IT'S TOO LATE instead. She gets it back on the right track tho - with the Soul inspiring '96 Olympic theme REACH, and continues it with the tasty IF WE WERE LOVERS, then the festivities rise to delightfully dizzying levels with the high energy groove of YOU'LL BE MINE(Party Time), this Song is pure Fun in Musical form - it will make You feel like You're a Kid at Disney World. We then hear HEAVEN'S WHAT I FEEL, a bouncy confection of solid Milk Chocolate Ear candy from Her 1998 underrated Master work GLORIA! Then I'M NOT GIVING YOU UP(the uptempo version from the Video)turns up the sensual intensity with Gloria's Passionate Voice presiding over a lush, and Beautiful mix of Spanish Guitars, and pulsating tropical rhythms - A truly GREAT Song in either version! 4.0 out of 5 stars Mrs Estefan - The only Latino Queen 24 April 2005
Format:Audio CD
It may be that Gloria is more famous for her tracks from the 80's and early 90's. Her first GH album is great - it showcases all of her early hits and is a must buy for any fan of 80's music or anyone just getting 'into the latin groove'! But this second GH is a very different affair all together!
It is a far more mixed bunch than the first hits collection. It spans songs from Mi Tierra to the excellent Gloria!.
Gloria is an amazing talent, and for me she is the only consistent female artist along with Madonna.
She has a truly wonderful voice - she can do ballads like no other and she sounds great on the disco infused tracks!
The 3new songs on the CD are very good too - they really show her range and diversity. Okay, so she isn't a 'button pusher' like Madonna (there is only 1 Madonna though!!!) but she sings about what she feels and she does it with passion and integrity.
Anyone looking to discover a fantastic pop album with brilliant variety can't go far wrong with this wonderful mix! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The latino queen still rules the world 5 Mar 2001
Format:Audio CD
Gloria Estefan is the sort of person who should be easy to hate, why?. She is obscenely wealthy, stunningly beautiful, a complete musical genius, and, a fantastic human being.Simply put, she has it all.Should anybody doubt the talent, just listen to this latest collection of gems offered herein. Uptempo, classic sassy latin rythmns, cover versions of past hits, or sultry passionate love songs, all are here, portrayed with the excellence that has for so many years now, become expected from the latino queen. Ricky, Christine, Jenifer and Enrique this is the album you should all buy, the first lady of latin is still the only latino anyone could ever want. From the opening Turn the beat around to the six minute, superbly reworked Conga this album re affirms what true superstardom is all about.Do not accept any imitations, if you want latin music, at its very best, then you want Gloria Estefan, the trail blazer. God save the latino queen, music needs her.
