This compilation, now re-issued at budget price, was originally released as a full price album supported by TV advertising, to capitalize on the success of Wet wet wet's cover of Love is all around, featured in the soundtrack of Four weddings and a funeral. Their cover spent many weeks at number one in the UK charts and sparked interest in the original sixties version by the Troggs, whose style was raw rock'n'roll. Their lead singer, Reg Presley, had a distinctive, suggestive style.
The Troggs began their run of chart hits with Wild thing, a novelty song that reached number two in the UK but topped the charts for six weeks in America. By the time it peaked in America, the Troggs were on their second UK single - With a girl like you, which went all the way to number one. Thus, they occupied the number one positions in Britain and America simultaneously, but with different songs, but they never reached number one again in either country. Nevertheless, the had several other major UK hits including Love is all around, I can't control myself and Anyway that you want me, all of which made the UK top ten, together with the top twenty UK hits Give it to me and Night of the long grass.
This collection includes some B-sides and many tracks recorded in the seventies and nineties. Most peculiar is their cover of Good vibrations, very different from the original by the Beach boys, but brilliant in its own way. The other songs are mainly original and of a remarkably high quality.
The Troggs were a somewhat odd sixties group but that's why they are worth listening to.

There have been plenty of compilations that show off the primitive work of these troglodytes, who have been hailed by many as the godfathers of garage rock and punk rock. The motivation for this 1994 TV-advertised compilation was to cash in on the revival of interest which had been generated by Wet Wet Wet's hugely successful, if cloyingly sweet, cover version of lead singer Reg Presley's composition 'Love Is All Around'. (It was at number 1 in the UK for 15 weeks that year.) Sensibly, like nearly all the rest of those efforts, it boasts the splendid hits they enjoyed at their brief late 1960's peak, including that familiar lovelorn ballad and: 'Wild Thing'; 'I Can't Control Myself'; 'With a Girl Like You'; 'Anyway That You Want Me', and 'Give It To Me'. Pleasingly, It also features some less well known but pretty compelling cuts from that era, such as 'Cousin Jane', which recalls The Who's creepy 'Uncle Ernie', and the crude, but powerful, B-side 'I Want You'.

But elsewhere the compilers of this suspiciously neatly-filled CD (it clocks in at 79 minute 32 seconds) demonstrate a lack of judgement in their track selection. Over a quarter of the 25 songs featured here come from Athens Andover, their largely uncelebrated 1992 comeback album with R.E.M members Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry; and it isn't a surprise to learn that the three lethargically-paced singles from the mid-1970s - 'Summertime'; 'I'll Buy You An Island' and the almost heretical cover of The Beach Boys classic 'Good Vibrations - were flops.

This is an excellent compilation for anyone just getting into the wonderful world of The Troggs. Fans long-in-the-tooth will have everything here already, but even then, it's at a good price and nice to stick in the player to enjoy someone elses choice of Trogg greats.
'Little Girl' has always been a favourite Troggs' ballad, as is the dreamy but rather naughty thoughts behind the 'Cousin Jane' lyrics. Once a single, 'Summertime' is one of Reg's big teaser's, chock full of "what's he going to say next?" terror for the radio stations in its day, but a favourite track once you've heard it and catch on to the cleverness behind it.
Some of the later tracks are from the 'Athens - Andover' album the band recorded with member's of REM; so they're not actually in the 'Greatest Hits' category just yet, but soon could be.
'Jingle Jangle' is from their first LP, and is again a nice and unusual laid-back song, as is my wife Jane's fave, 'I'll Buy You An Island,' which she no doubt wishes Reg would do and take her away there for a break!

The hits are all here, and you will recognise how many have been covered since. Any way... by Spiritualized for example ! Simple riffs and lusty lyrics they were a massive band in the 60's. The later stuff drifts off in terms of quality.

I gave this to my other half and he loves it. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the music, too and happily listen along. All their bet ones.
