CD Description
The Coasters' Greatest Hits album was just their second album release, issued in 1959 as a belated follow-up to 1957's The Coasters album on Atco. By the time 1959 came around, The Coasters had registered a dozen R&B and pop hits in their US homeland, including the pop chart topper Yakety Yak and the R&B chart toppers Young Blood, Searchin', Yakety Yak and Poison Ivy. These smashes are featured here, as is their very first chart hit Down In Mexico.

Format:Audio CD
Searchin' (sorry about the pun!) for Coasters albums I came across this one. It looked good. Same cover as my vinyl copy of "The Coasters' Greatest Hits" only missing the line "An ATCO Recording" in the bottom LH corner and "LONDON Records HA-K 2237"just after the last "HITS" in the fifth title line. And that album was one that got played a lot. The contents are the same - several biggies but excluding the Robins tracks plus later singles - inc. the odd B side but all good stuff.
But then came the disappointment. From previews of these tracks it was apparent that the quality on this CD wasn't a lot better than my original vinyl - lots of pops and crackles which suggest that it had been copied off less than brilliant vinyl - it`s not bad at the start but seems to worsen as one goes through. I know this has been stated in other reviews but I don't think it does any harm to reinforce the point in case it's missed by someone skimming through quickly. This album appears to come from Atco so I can't understand why the original masters haven't been used.

What a shame that such good music should be served up in such an awful state.
Terrible sound quality.
Avoid this and go for :Singles A's & B's instead.
If you intend to play this on a hifi, unplug the speakers first!

First of all let me say that the music from the Coasters is excellent and timeless. It can still be enjoyed as much today as when it was first released in the 1950's. Unfortunately where this release falls down is in its sound quality. Ok it's a budget issue, but that doesn't excuse the very poor sound. Original recordings they may be, but most if not all have obviously been transferred direct from vinyl, as a variety of clicks, pops and scratches can clearly be heard, especially on the tracks towards the end of the cd. Many of the tracks suffer from distorted sound too. Surely it wouldn't have taken much effort to source the original tapes, even if the price was commensurately increased? Anyone wanting to hear these classic tracks in their pristine glory would be better off making an alternative purchase.
