5.0 out of 5 stars Grime Genius, 19 Jun 2008
By Mr. J. W. Leggett - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After hearing Wileys new release 'Grime Wave' I have to say I was a bit dissapointed - so its time for Wiley to step down as the king of grime and tip his hat to Skepta. His lyrics are fast, precise and more importantly for me, clever - gone are the relentless, heard-it-all-before chats about guns, shanks, beef, postcodes and rubbish that EVERYONE is rapping about - here we've got tracks like 'The Journey' which charts the life of Skepta from conception to choosing his MC name or 'In A Corner' where the aim of his night isnt to talk about stupid stuff like guns but to have a good time and drink too much champagne!

On the flipside to the innovative ideas for songs, Skepta inevitably mentions the guns and stabbings that litter the scene and that everyone reads about or experiences first hand in the tune 'Blood, Sweat and Tears' - another positive song which urges youngsters to stop all this violence. Skeptas lyrics jokingly poke fun at these kids who want to walk around acting tough 'If you wanna be some Rocky Balboa then put on your boxing gloves and jump in the boxing ring / Exactly, thats what I thought, your not a Mike Tyson, you're more like a Don king'. JME features on the track and speaks about how he used to want pogs and scalextric and doesnt get why kids now want to pick up a gun or a knife - a true and amusing contrast...

It constantly feels like Skepta has nothing to hide - his lyrics show a lot of pride and support for the people who have got him to where he is, notably so in 'Shape Shifting' where the theme is Skepta talking from other peoples perspectives such as Tim Westwood and basically giving him a voice to defend himself.

Anyway, get this album if youre sick of brainless MC's talking the same old rubbish and sick of beats that sound like they were made on a mega drive - it feels like skepta has the intelligence to say something positive and hopefully has raised the bar for the grime scene...
