Product Description

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen" and "You're My Best Friend". The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have travelled well through the years. --Rickey Wright

Product Description

Queen are a British rock band formed in London in 1971, originally consisting of Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar, vocals), and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). Queen's earliest works were influenced by progressive rock, but the band gradually ventured into more conventional and radio-friendly works, incorporating more diverse and innovative styles in their music. Before joining Queen, Brian May and Roger Taylor had been playing together in a band named Smile with bassist Tim Staffell. Freddie Mercury (then known by his birth name of Farrokh/ Freddie Bulsara) was a fan of Smile, and encouraged them to experiment with more elaborate stage and recording techniques after Staffell's departure in 1970. Mercury himself joined the band shortly thereafter, changed the name of the band to 'Queen', and adopted his familiar stage name. John Deacon was recruited prior to recording their eponymous debut album (1973). Queen enjoyed success in the UK with their debut and its follow-up, Queen II (1974), but it was the release of Sheer Heart Attack (1974) and A Night at the Opera (1975) that gained the band international success. The latter featured "Bohemian Rhapsody", which stayed at number one in the UK Singles Chart for nine weeks; it charted at number one in several other territories, and gave the band their first top ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. Their 1977 album, News of the World, contained two of rock's most recognisable anthems, "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions". By the early 1980s, Queen were one of the biggest stadium rock bands in the world, and their performance at 1985's Live Aid is regarded as one of the greatest in rock history. In 1991, Mercury died of bronchopneumonia, a complication of AIDS, and Deacon retired in 1997. Since then, May and Taylor have infrequently performed together, including a collaboration with Paul Rodgers under the name Queen + Paul Rodgers which ended in May 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great place to start 2 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
This was the 1st queen album I ever listened to and it's the one that got me hooked. Every song on this album is flawless. I know everyone has probably heard Bohemean Rhapsody to death, but there are some lesser known tracks on here, like Somebody to Love, You're my best friend and Don't Stop me Now (not that lesser known I grant you) which are all fantastic.
This is not my favourite queen album, however. Probably because I've heard all the songs too often and they are all fairly commercial. My album of choice would either be Queen 2 or Sheer Heart Attack. Though if you don't own any queen albums or have never heard them (you are either under 7, dead or from Mars) this is the ideal place to start.
It is impossible to fault this album, so if you don't own it, buy it now!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest songs of the greatest band 6 Jan 2011
Format:Audio CD
To put it simply Queen are my favourite band of all-time and this first Greatest Hits album contains many of my favourite songs. The complete track list is as follows:

1. Bohemian Rhapsody
2. Another One Bites the Dust
3. Killer Queen
4. Fat Bottomed Girls
5. Bicycle Race
6. You're my Best Friend
7. Don't Stop me Now
8. Save Me
9. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
10. Somebody to Love
11. Now I'm Here
12. Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy
13. Play the Game
14. Flash
15. Seven Seas of Rhye
16. We Will Rock You
17. We are the Champions

All of the songs on this album are more than worthy of a full five stars with `Don't Stop me Now', `We are the Champions' and `Bohemian Rhapsody' being, in my view, some of the greatest songs by Queen or any other artist. If a had to choose my least favourite song from the disc it would probably be `Crazy Little Thing Called Love' but even then I would say that the song is still well worth a full five stars on its own.

This Greatest Hits CD is definitely a must buy for any fan of Queen.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Album of All time. 12 July 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
What can I say about this album. It is arguably THE greatest greatest hits album ever produced. Anyone who can honestly say that there is one bad track on this album should be shot, and, let's face it, you can't say that about many other compilations. Even with the demise of Freddie Mercury, Queen are still loved by many people, nearly a decade after the release of their last single. The live on, and this has to be THE album to buy for anyone who enjoys rock music, but there are also some fine ballads featured (e.g.) Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy. Also, Bohemian Rhapsody has to be the greatest song of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly one of THE best albums of all time! 18 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
This is undoubtedly the best album the band released, showing in particular the artistic merit which Freddie possesses. The album combines the supreme harmonised vocals of the band, and the hard rock tunes that they are so notoriously known for. Consisting of the outstanding harmonised vocal songs, such as 'Somebody To Love' and 'Killer Queen', to the classic rock anthems of 'We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions'. Note that 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is officially the 'Song of the Millennium' and the 4th best seller of all time. A strong reccomendation for anyone, and a must for Queen fans who don't already own this superb album.

I have always loved Queen.
Which some people find strange because I'm 13, female and all my friends love teenybop music, which I hate.
Queen are a legend. Every song they ever recorded is excellent, this one being the first of three-so far-Greatest Hits album, though every album is a hit.
Timeless classics up 'til 1980, including the epic Bohemian Rhapsody, anthems We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions, groovy Another One Bites The Dust, the different and lyrically strange Killer Queen and Seven Seas Of Rhye...too many to describe.
Queen still live on, even with the tragic death of Freddie, and they'll always have a place in my heart, and my CD rack.
"Goodbye everybody, I've got to go, gotta leave you all behind and face the truth"

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - No Other Word For It . . . 26 Sep 2003
By David Cranson VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Just what you always wanted.
Bo Rhap, Crazy Little Thing, Champions, Lover Boy, Save Me, Now I'm Here - do you need me to continue?
This is music at it's very best. A rock band not afraid to experiment, refusing to be bound by others expectations. Queen are so unique that these songs could not have been by any other group or band. You need to own this, you really do.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent album by the greatest band 21 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent album containing 17 brilliant songs. When you start you can't stop listening to it. Contains all their best hits; although some of the hits go onto Greatest Hits 2 (Kind of magic/Show must go on/Under pressure to name but three), so therefore you miss a few excellent songs. I recommend buying both albums if you want to!
However, greatest hits 1 is probably the best of the three greatest hits albums.
