Biography

Britney Spears was born in Kentwood, Louisiana on December 2, 1981. Appearing in variety shows and choirs throughout her hometown, Britney’s talent was obvious from a young age. The aspiring young performer’s first major audition was for The Disney Channel’s “Mickey Mouse Club” at the age of eight. Too young for the show, but too talented to dismiss, a Disney producer helped Britney land an… Read more in Amazon's Britney Spears Store

BBC Review

It's hard to imagine that five years have passed since a pert and pouty 16 year old Britney skipped onto the scene. Now, with four albums, a film, a divorce, another husband and a faux-Sapphic snog stashed under her belt-cum-miniskirt, she's established herself as quite the grande-dame of pop.

Not surprising then that a Greatest Hits album has found its way onto the pre-Christmas shelves, waiting to be snapped up by a fan base ranging from tweenies to gay men still quivering to "Toxic".

They will not feel short-changed. The album is as calorific as the KFC burgers dished up at her chav-style wedding; twenty finger lickin' tracks that mirror her trajectory from pretty pop puff to lusty strumpet.

"...Baby One More Time", "Stronger", "Oops! I Did It Again" and "Sometimes" are all there to represent the innocent years when Britney annoyed and titillated in equal measure.

As the declarations of innocence began to wear a little thin -she was dating the highly shaggable Justin Timberlake after all -"Overprotected" and "I'm Not A Girl", Not Yet A Woman" served to alloy her critics' barbs. "I'm A Slave 4 U" was the turning point. Complete with sweaty python and the song-writing skills of Pharrell Williams, Britney dropped the veil of probity and writhed into wanton self-publicity.

The services of other song-writers make a significant appearance on the album, with Pharrell Williams delivering again for "Boys", R. Kelly transforming Britney into a grubby Beyonce on "Outrageous" and pop alchemist, Cathy Dennis, waving her magic wand for "Toxic".

As with most Greatest Hits albums, you'll find a couple of covers lurking amongst the goodies. The gloopy re-working of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" and a lame stab at Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" make up Britney's quota.

Despite the shiny, taut Britney on the cover, in real life the singer seems to be plumping up nicely into her wifely duties, declaring motherhood as the next thing on the agenda. Two robust, unreleased tracks, "I've Just Begun (Having My Fun)" and "Do Somethin'" suggest, however, that she may still be churning out a few more No.1s before taking time out to sing lullabies to her brood. --Annabel Leathes

Album Description

No longer a baby, Britney Spears has become a pop princess to Madonna's (with whom she sings here) queen. Featuring all her biggest songs, Greatest Hits collects 17 tracks spanning her remarkable career so far. The tracks include her massive pop debut "Baby One More Time", the saucy "Oops!...I Did It Again", the funky Neptunes-produced "Slave 4 U", and the kickin' "Toxic".

Perfect Pop 17 Nov 2004
Format:Audio CD
I must say first, that I am not the biggest fan of Britneys. Often her voice, unless controlled can be too nasal sounding and 'effected'.
HOWEVER, this really is an outstanding greatest hits package, jam packed with dance floor fillers (such as 'Toxic', 'Stronger' and 'Crazy'), perfect pop ('Oops! I Did It Again', 'Born To Make You Happy' and the iconic 'Baby One More Time'), at times sexy (as in the Prince-ish 'I'm A Slave 4 U' and 'Boys') and gorgeous ballads ('Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know', 'Sometimes' and 'Everytime'). This cd also includes a duet with Madonna, the dance floor hit 'Me Against The Music' - Madonna's only single duet in her 21 year career, quite a coup for Britney. With a couple of new hits to, the best of which is an electro-pop cover of Bobby Browns early 90's hit 'My Prerogative'. The only weak moments for me are 'I Love Rock 'N' Roll', which to be honest isn't bad, just not worthy of inclusion, and the pleasant 'I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman' (which was co-written with Dido, though she remains un-credited). As for 'Lucky' this really is one of the most saccharine sweet pieces of pop I've ever heard, however, I can't help enjoying it.
This really is an excellent hits package, and one that must make fans of hers long to see what she will do next.

Pure Pop 4 Feb 2005
By Stracs TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
If its easy listening, pure pop you are looking for then this album is ideal. I like many of Britney's singles, but not enough to want to buy her albums, so for people like me this is a great compilation. It has all of her big hits on it, and a couple of decent enough new tracks for those who are hard core fans. It is pure pop of course, and will do nothing to challenge the brain cells, but the songs are by and large very catchy and easy listening.

The best songs on here are the more up tempo songs such as Crazy and Toxic, my personal favourites being Stronger and Overprotected. These are great singalong, dancelong tunes, perfect for a party. The weaker songs are mostly the ballads, which are a bit cheesy and sweet for my tastes though I am sure they would appeal to many, and Lucky which, although catchy, really grates after a while! The album also includes duets with Madonna, and a stronger duet with Pharrell from N.E.R.D.

Britney has her own style, charisma and pulling power and this does come across very much in her songs, making this album a pretty enjoyable listen overall. I would say the album is particulalry worthwhile for those non hardcore fans like myself who would not buy Britney's albums but like many of her singles and enjoy a good pop singalong now and then!

A pop LEGEND 24 Oct 2011
By popfan
Format:Audio CD
I dont hide the fact im a huge madonna fan,i seldom give credit to other female artists. However Britney spears has the right to call herself a legend and this greatest hits package shows why. Covering her whole career all her singles are here- all great pop and catchy tunes. Britneys had her problems but never in the studio and on the dancefloor... this cd is a bargain, especially with the bonus remix disc. The case is cardboard but id still reccomend it to popfans.... madonna features too.... clever britney!
