Although his two biggest and most famous hits (Everybody's talking, Without you) are by other songwriters, Nilsson (born Harry Nelson) wrote a number of songs that became successful for others.
The Yardbirds were the first major act to record one of Nilsson's songs (Ten little Indians) but Nilsson didn't give up his day job (at a bank) until he heard another of his songs (Cuddly toy) on the radio, performed by the Monkees. More recordings followed including Story of rock'n'roll (Turtles), Without her (Blood sweat and tears) and - most important of all - One (Three Dog Night), which became a huge American hit.
Nilsson finally got his break as a recording artist with Everybody's talking, a cover of a Fred Neil Song that was adopted as a movie theme (Midnight cowboy). Puppy love (David Cassidy) became yet another success for a different singer with one of Nilsson's songs.
Nilsson's biggest success as a singer was the international number one hit, Without you, which was written by two members of Badfinger, both of whom eventually committed suicide. This classic song has subsequently been a top ten country hit for T G Sheppard and a number one UK pop hit in the nineties for Mariah Carey. Many other singers have also covered the song, but Nilsson recorded the definitive version.
Nilsson also recorded an album of standards (represented here by As time goes by) and many other great songs. This compilations includes Nilsson's versions of all the songs made famous by others mentioned above except Ten little Indians, plus those two classic hits as well as Me and my arrow, Coconut, I guess the Lord must be in New York City and a few other wonderful songs.

After watching a documentary a couple of weeks ago on BBC 3 about Harry Nilsson's life and work. It reminded me of how much i missed his music. Time and time again throughout the documentary I found myself saying, "oh I haven't heard that song in years". So of course this dvd was the most logical step and since buying it, i have found myself playing it in the car to work every morning and humming the tunes throughout the day at work.
My favourite at the moment is "The Lord must be in New York city" which i find to be one of the best examples of Nilsson's wonderful vocal talent. There is a warmth and clarity to his voice which is unique and beautiful and of the like we wont see again.

Just about every Nilsson song that was a hit is on this CD. Hearing them again just shows why they were such smash hits. Buy.

According to the back cover blurb of this economical compilation, when John Lennon and Paul McCartney were asked to name their favourite American musician at a Beatles press conference they answered 'Nilsson'. Hearing the best of these string- and piano-driven tunes - 'Everybody's Talkin'', 'I Guess the Lord Must Be In New York City', 'One', 'Without You' - I can see that they have something of a point. But I can't say that I wholly agreed with their recommendation of the singer-songwriter, despite the technical virtuosity of his three-and-a-half octave voice and baroque musical arrangements. I found some of his own songs, such as 'Cuddly Toy' and 'The Puppy Song', to be too schmaltzy, whilst some of his interpretations of others people's material, like his take on the jazz standard 'As Time Goes By', were unexceptional.

Obtained this as an introduction to the master ( as acknowledged by the Beatles) - will explore individual albums later but as a sampler this cannot be beaten

I have to confess I only bought this CD for "Coconut" as this is my favourite Nilsson track but then of course I left the CD playing and along came "Everybody's talking", "I guess the Lord must be in New York City" and "Without you", so I got 4 for the price of 1. Unless you are a big Nilsson fan I feel the rest of the album is a bit bland, even boring but I'm sure die hard Nilsson fans will love it. By the way "Coconut" is as good as ever.

It was fantastic to hear all these wonderful songs again. Nilsson had a great voice and sang some memorable, beautiful and sometimes quirky songs. This CD took me back to my youth and even my 30 something daughters enjoyed the experience.

Saw this on a bargain shelf at local Tesco's. £3 down to 75 pence. No brainer. Apart from "Without You" Nilsson has passed me by and this little gem will hopefully put that right.
