Amazon.co.uk Review

They say humour and music shouldn't mix, but it seems no-one told leisurewear-clad Welsh rap octet Goldie Lookin' Chain: their Greatest Hits, a major-label compilation of the highlights of their last five self-released CD-Rs, is the rare comedy record that transcends its laugh-out-loud novelty. The gags they offer are seldom sophisticated – the presence of a song titled "Your Mother's Got A Penis" has probably already alerted you to that fact – but the jokes come thick and fast, and there's enough deft characterisation to leisurewear-clad GLC members Dwain Xain, Mr Love Eggs, and The Maggot to drag the likes of "Half-Man, Half-Machine" and "Soap Bar" into the realms of situation comedy. Many of their best ideas are stolen: UK Top 5 single "Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do" nabs a vocal hook from KRS-One's "Sound Of The Police", while "Self Suicide" makes a cheeky rip from '90s rap goths Gravediggaz. But for all the petty theft on show, the GLC aren't lacking in ideas. With the possible exception of the slimy R&B grind of "You Knows I Loves You" – which, of course, is meant to sound utterly, horribly sleazy – there's not a bad track here. --Louis Pattison

YOU KNOWS IT CLART!!! 10 Sep 2004
Format:Audio CD
The Goldie Lookin Chain album is finally here for your listening pleasure - and every track will have you cracking up as they go through lyrics such as 'your mothers got a short dress on that sometimes exposes the tip of her dong.' GLC have been causing a bit of a stir on the underground scene for quitew a while now, playing shows in smaller venues but they are now gracing the mainstream and what better way could have done it than with the instantly catchy tune of 'Guns dont kill people, rappers do.' GLC truly are a class act and this 'Greatest Hits' album will no doubt be one of the albums of the year. Some people are calling them the new Darkness, otheres a Welsh Wu Tang - whatever you wish to call them they will sure put a smile on your face and this CD will be in your player for months to come.

Having grown up on a Newport council estate ( and thankfully escaped ) I can fully appreciate the humour in this album. When I first heard it I didn't realise it would have nationwide appeal as there seem to be a lot of 'in-jokes' but obviously I was wrong! The highlights of the album for me are 'Soapbar' and 'You know I loves you' which bring back happy memories of my teenage years ( in those days if someone bought you a bag of chips and an item of 'jewellery' from Elizabeth Duke you'd be well chuffed ). If you want hip-hop forget it. If you want a laugh then buy it, buy it, buy it!

Once in a blue moon a record like this one comes along and absolutely redefines and resurges popular music as we know it. The last one was Dire Straits' "rothers In Arms" back in the mid Eighties so this slab of beauty has been a long time coming. From beginning to end listening to this record is the aural equivalent of swimming through blue quicksilver clouds at the speed of an amphetamine sulphate fuelled Superman. The lyrics are pure poetry with the rhyming skills of Shelley spiked with the sharpest wit of an ultramodern Oscar Wilde. GLC's street articulacy is as relevant today as NWA's cussing and expletive shoutings back in the early Nineties and as potent as Public Enemy's Nation of Millions. As well as its modern relevance its art is also to be seriously considered. Its innovation and sheer avant garde echoes the Velvet Underground circa Sister Ray (no coincidence that there's a Welsh influence on both). This is bona fide classic. And it's funny too.
