Love him or hate him, Lenny Kravitz is pure rock...well, kind of. He is when he wants to be, but he also has a fine ability in showing and adding soul, pop and even a drop of reggae to his own brand of rock n' roll. And whether you like it or not, there's no denying the infectiousness of Kravitz's work.
It's certainly work to be proud of, as not only is it great rock, but it's also genre-busting music. Although for the majority of the time, Kravitz sticks to pure rock (and why not?), that doesn't stop him indulging in funk (the fine 'Black Velveteen') , dreamy pop (The hit single, 'Fly Away', which you'd have had to have been living under the worlds largest rock in the late 90's to have not heard), reggae beats ('I Belong To You') and most interestingly of all the perfect Motown stylings of 'It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over', which wouldn't have gone amiss in an early 70's dance compilation...but he always excelled at his funky rock, as proves the riffy, almost Hendrix-for-the-90's, 'Rock And Roll Is Dead', the surging, 'Are You Gonna Go My Way', the driving-in-the-slow-lane of, 'Again', the raunchy, 'American Woman' and the head-bobbingly good, 'Mr. Cab Driver', all provide as highlights amongst tough competition.
While right in the middle of it all, 'Heaven Help', a piano led ballad, threatens to break things down a little, with Kravitz's 'Greatest Hits' you're guarenteed one of the greatest rock n' roll compilations of latter days that you'll find. And although he does delve into tacky ideas while perhaps trying to rehash his influences ('Stand By My Woman'), and though it'll all never really influences anything, the majority of his work here will stand the test of time and that's all that really matters with Lenny Kravitz. That, and to have a damn good time.
4 Stars.

A few months ago, I was trying to think who sung that song 'Fly Away'. I soon found out it was Lenny himself and knew that I loved his song 'Are You Gonna Go my Way' aswell. I had some extra cash lying around that I wanted to spend on music so I thought, what the hell and bought this album. I wasn't at all sure what to expect, because I had only heard of two of his songs before, the two mentioned, so it was kind of a stab in the dark.
I'll say now that I am thoroughly glad I did purchase this. I was highly pleased with every single song on this CD, I particularly like American Woman, Rock and Roll is Dead, Mr Cab Driver and Always on the Run.
Lenny does a great job and this CD definitely does hold his greatest hits. It's certainly worth buying, even if you're not a particularly huge fan. I wasn't, but this album changed that. If you liked his more famous 'Are you Gonna go my Way' and 'Fly Away', you will most definitely like all the other songs on this album. Easily worth a high position on your CD rack.

After buying this album out of pure curiosity, I have began to probe the entire beat pallette Lenny has to offer. Mixing 90's hip hop with 'Shaft' style getaway music this is a highly motivated choice. A must for any person who appreciates good music.. You too will find yourself endulging in this album more than you could possible imagine. It's got a little something for all warps of life...

I've had a kind of love-hate relationship with Lenny Kravitz. Being in my 50's I am predisposed to his type of music because it is very much rooted in the early 70's rock scene. A number of times I almost bought his latest album but there was always something that stopped me, so a "best of" is ideal to catch up with his greatest hits. And in fact this "best of" manages to capture what I like about Lenny, and a bit of what I don't like. "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and "It Ain't Over `Til It's Over" are certainly up there with the all-time classics, and "Again" is worth considering. There are a couple of tracks that I'm not too hot on, such as "Always On The Run", but globally the disc offers a good overview of his career.

Now I don't claim to be a Rock expert, or a devoted fan of Mr. Kravitz. I have followed his career for a number of years, and every now and then a song of his will catch my attention. This CD is the perfect one for me, as I won't be getting all his CDs, and this covers the best of them( saying that I would like his very Curtis sounding' What goes around come around' from his Mama Said CD. This leads me to my second point. In his earlier CDs as he struggled to find the right line between sounding like your idols, and finding his own voice, he often came across as an immature artist. I believe that after four or five Cds he is finally starting to find his own voice. My favorite songs on this Cd are' Are you Gonna go my way?'' Fly away', 'It ain't over 'till it's over', 'Always on the Run', and the excellent 'Let Love Rule'.

This still remains at the very top of my CD rack! I love this CD, on a simple fluke purchase on the basis of the few songs I knew I found myself coming across a brilliant cross generic music album, the guy is so cool. often compared to Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz is our modern day mr cool with a brilliant blend of musical styles, ballads and anthems this is an album to get!
