While I generally prefer rock music from an earlier era, this is mainly because I don't find much to get excited about in the modern era - but there are exceptions, including Catatonia. Their biggest hits were Mulder and Scully and Road rage, though lead singer Cerys Matthews also had hits duetting with Space and Tom Jones. Those hits are included here. The duet with Tom Jones (Baby it's cold outside) is an old chestnut - it's one of the best versions of this song (and I've heard a lot of them).
Cerys was the centrepiece of the band. Great though the musicians were, Cerys was the star, with an ability to sing anything - sounding really sexy on a love song, but really aggresive on songs that express strong opinions. The band has split up now, but Cerys continues as a solo singer.
Before the band split, they released four albums, of which the middle two (International velvet, Equally cursed and blessed) were the most successful. Understandably, it is tracks from these two albums that dominate this collection.
This is a fine collection of music by a great band.

An excellent collection of Catatonia's ingenious creativity, smoothed by Cerys's caramel voice. But buy the U.S. version double disc instead of the U.K. version - it contains the 15 tracks plus 10 more on the second disc.

Fans of Catatonia will need no introduction to the beauty of their music, but to the newcomer, their many balads and rock anthems can seem blurry and unconnected, yet oddly samey.
However, it only takes a couple of listens of this glorius disc to understand what Catatonia are about - deep themes mixed with comedic lyrics, giving the perfect britpop sound.
This is Catatonia's definitve collection of tracks, and loyal fans are rewarded with the second CD of new songs. Leave it on the shop shelf at your peril.

This collection spans the entire (and sadly brief) career of Welsh band Catatonia. The album kicks off with their biggest hit 'Mulder and Scully' and also includes singer Cerys Mathews' collaborations with Tom Jones and Space. Cerys' powerful vocals are what set Catatonia apart from their indie-rock peers. She could sound raw and raucous on tracks like 'I am the mob' and 'Bleed', but fragile and ethereal on the beautiful 'Strange Glue'. My personal favourites are 'You've Got a lot to answer for' and 'Sweet Catatonia', both from their debut album. Let's hope that this isn't the last we hear from Cerys (Brysia 'nol!).

it is what it says it is, all the hits are there and the dynamic vocals that range from the frantic to the melodic, almost haunting aare a reminder of how great a contribution this band made.

When I bought this my partner suggested that Catatonia's greatest hits must be the shortest album in history. Not quite true, and worth buying for the bigs hits like Road Rage and Mulder & Scully, plus the track with Cerys and Space, but the album tails off and there is a fair bit of filler towards the end.

This disc is a great introduction to the music of Catatonia, but the real gems are on disc 2 of the 2 disc collector's edition.
