By Peter Durward Harris #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This compilation is, for the most part, very different from Reba's first MCA greatest hits package although it contains one track (Love will find its way to you) that could have been included on that first volume but wasn't. The presence of that track merely serves to emphasize Reba's move away from a very traditional form of country music to a more contemporary style that brought greater commercial success but upset a lot of her traditional fans. While I generally prefer those earlier recordings, there can be no denying the quality of Reba's later music as showcased here.

The set opens with Does he love you, a brilliant duet with Linda Davis that had never been released on any previous Reba album. This track eventually gave Reba her only UK chart entry when it belatedly became a minor UK hit for one week in 1999, several years after its original release in America. Reba has only rarely visited the UK to promote her music so her lack of success there is no real surprise especially considering the limited chart successes by other country singers who have made frequent UK appearances. It is a far greater surprise to find that Reba has never had a major American pop hit although she has, of course, been consistently successful on the country charts.

Apart from Does he love you, the compilation includes another new recording (They asked about you) leaving room for only eight of Reba's hits up to that point. As there were many more than eight to choose from, some were inevitably omitted including Reba's great cover of Cathy's clown (despite it being a number one country hit). The missing hits from this period didn't appear on volume three either so there are still several of Reba's major country hits that have yet to appear on a compilation.

During the period covered by this compilation, many of Reba's musicians died in a plane crash. Reba normally travelled with her musicians while touring but on this occasion she wasn't with them due to other commitments. The episode affected Reba deeply and this showed in her album For my broken heart, represented by three tracks here (The greatest man I never knew, the title track and Is there life out there).

With other Reba classics such as Fancy (a cover of a Bobbie Gentry song), You lie, Rumor has it and Walk on, this collection serves as a fitting, if brief, reminder of Reba's most successful years. Reba continued to be hugely popular throughout the nineties and the best of her later hits can be found on volume three.

If you are only interested in Reba's traditional country recordings, avoid this album and volume three - stick to her eighties recordings. If, however, you enjoy Reba's later pop-country music, this collection provides a great introduction to that music.

Although this album could have had more songs on it (especially from the 1988 "Reba" album), this is a true Greatest Hits classic. With new songs such as "Does He Love You" and "They Asked About You", this package goes to show the new and upcoming country stars that Reba has been doing this since they were in diapers and she will continue to sing and outsell them for decades to come.

A True Hits Package 14 Sep 2006
By K. Fontenot - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
While many of today's country (and for that matter, every other genre) performers crank out "Hits" packages with one or two number one tunes, Reba McEntire put out this disc with a slim ten tunes. With that said, however, all ten of these songs are legitimate hits. From "Rumor Has It" to "You Lie," McEntire does well with the song selection here.

What you get is a small sampling of ten of Reba's best tunes. Many of today's artists struggle to find enough "hits" to compile a hits package, but Reba has been around long enough to simply pull a few tunes from her catalogue and make a solid hits album worthy of purchase. She's in a small group of artists who can do such things. Other names in that list would include George Jones, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Merle Haggard, Alabama, and Dolly Parton. That's good company folks.

My personal favorite on this disc is "Fancy." The entire disc gives the listener a chance to listen to McEntire when she was beginning to loosen her country bindings and feel out other styles of music from blues to broadway. McEntire is savvy, and doesn't need to resort to controversy or pandering to prove just how great of an artist she is.

Purchase this album if you want some great country and pop country tunes. Long before Faith and Tim were considered a "dynamic duo" and the Dixie Chicks were singing Western swing at birthday parties, McEntire was establishing herself as one of the greatest female performers in country music. Also of note is the fact that she made her mark when the country genre was dominated by men.

Highly recommended.
