If you love Billy Idol's songs but don't have any of his CDs, then this is really the only CD you'll need to buy. All of his top charting singles are here in this, the definitive GREATEST HITS of The Sneering One. :)
William Broad (his real name as most people know by now) came out of England's brief Punk Rock era in the late 1970's with his band Generation X (by far predating the common use of the term which only came into vogue in the '90's). When the band broke up in 1981, Billy then moved to New York City to pursue stardom on his own. Dissatisfied with some of the limitations of Punk, he sought to blend all of his influences--part Punk, part New Wave, and with a healthy dose of good ol' fashioned R & R--to create a sound that was all his.
He got his wish when he hooked up with pyrotechnical guitar wizard Steve Stevens, an American who had been involved with Punk on our side of the Atlantic and was also looking to branch out musically. Quickly signed to Chrysalis Records after releasing a successful EP (which included an amazing five-minute cover of the Tommy James and the Shondells classic "Mony Mony"), Billy Idol recorded his debut self-titled full-length LP in 1982 and took the world by storm. With the advent of MTV at around that time, millions of rock fans got to see Billy's showmanship talents and rugged good looks up front, as well as hear the cool music he made. With FM-radio staples such as "White Wedding," "Dancing With Myself" (a coy allusion to, er, self-gratification, and which he had originally sang with Generation X), and "Hot In The City," Billy achieved near-instant stardom.

This is a great collection of Billy Idols music and the best place to start if you're new to him. It has all of his best and well known hits and is perfect eighties nostalgia, as well as being great rock music as well. You'll be surprised at how many tracks you know and at how good his voice is. The last two new tracks of a live acoustic 'Rebel yell' and 'Don't you (forget about me)' are particularly good and an excellent way to finish a top CD of rocking music. Well worth a try.

As a punk rocker, Billy Idol forgot he was supposed to implode after a few hits. And he bypassed complaining about the world and himself. He does, though, stay most true to the punk ethos of bringing rock back to primal roots.

For the record: I don't think Billy Idol is a Satanist or a puppet of the illuminati. He doesn't use the index finger/pinky move nor the two handed triangle or the okay sign with three fingers up. (He simply pumps his fist). At most, Mr. Idol conjured the spirit of Gene Vincent while on a Red Bull bender. Then after five minutes he cast the spirit out by shouting, "Get the f--- out of the way!"

A post punk who still had attitude in the 80's but liked singing rock ballads, how bizarre. Lovers of the film 'Wedding Singer' take note, remember the airplane at the end.

For a 'budget' best of this packs a punch. Not only does it focus on the cream of Billy's ouput, but also includes a Simple Mind's cover version that was made for him (ie it sounds great). The real plus on this disc is the mastering, which is sympathetic yet crisp and punchy. I am a casual Idol fan to be honest, remembering the classics "Eyes Without A Face", "Rebel Yell" (both here is full length) and "White Wedding", but the rest of the stuff is good too.

Fantastic from start to finish. This guy is a very underrated artist. Very polished rock/pop. The only artist in this genre to do some covers of great originals and make them better!. The rest of the tracks are true Billy Idol originals and it's hard to pick a favourite. Well recorded with a very full and dynamic sound. Great stuff and highly recommended.
