4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat obsolete except for completists' sake, 12 Dec 2007

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Greatest Hits Volume 2 (Audio CD)
This appeared for Christmas '79, by which time Arrival, The Album, and Voulez Vous had yielded enough hits to make it viable. It's an odd collection: the rocky 'Rock Me' was an unknown pre-Eurovision song, and wasn't a hit single here; the contemporary singles I Have a Dream and Voulez Vous were omitted, presumably so people would continue buying the Voulez Vous album (which was only ~6 months old at the time).
Why 5 tracks from The Album? 'Eagle' is one of their best-known non-singles, 'Thank you for the music' and the 2 number 1s are obvious choices, but 'The Album''s 'I Wonder' is, like some of its other album tracks, somewhat lacklustre, in my view, compared to the faultlessly energetic powerpop of the albums before and after it. To represent Abba's ballads from this period, Arrival's 'My Love My Life' (inspired by 10cc's 'I'm Not In Love') way surpasses this in writing, arrangement and singing.
Like any Abba collection, it's classic pop, but 'Abba Gold' pretty well supercedes it. 'Rock Me' and their disco classic 'Summer Night City' (neither of which are on 'Gold') are well worth having, but you can get the latter on the Voulez Vous CD (my favorite Abba album, featuring some 7 top 5 songs and several other standout tracks).

5.0 out of 5 stars ABBA's second 'original' Greatest Hits compilation., 26 Nov 2008
By
FAMOUS NAME (UNITED KINGDOM) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Greatest Hits Volume 2 (Audio CD)

Whilst there is very little one can say about any ABBA album (Greatest Hits or otherwise) to add to what everybody knows already - namely; sheer brilliance, it has to be said that ABBA surprised many with this one by adding four non-hit tracks to this compilation. Okay, so there had been several included on the first 'Greatest Hits' album release that had not been singles in the UK - but they had been hits elsewhere, but here on this, we have four, including a couple of 'B' sides. The four in question are: 'Rock Me', 'Eagle', 'I Wonder (Departure)' and 'Thank You For The Music'.

'Rock Me' had been a surprise, since it was a song that was already four years old and had a been a 'B' side, and so one could have said 'why now'? 'Eagle' had been featured in 'ABBA - The Movie', and 'I Wonder (Departure)' had been a 'B' side also two years earlier. Of course it is well documented that ABBA's only mistake in an otherwise 'faultless' career of decision-making, was the failure to release the last one of the four 'Thank You For The Music' as a single back in 1977 when it had been recorded. The record had been well in demand as a single back then, and would have most definitely given ABBA another chart-topper had they released it. As it was, we were to wait almost seven years for them to finally issue it as a single in late 1983, but it was too late, and the public just did not buy it... I guess they just got tired of waiting.

However, as with all ABBA's albums; you will want to play this over and over again, and sing along, because we all seem to know the words without having to learn them!

Wonderful stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Swedish quartet that conquered the WORLD!, 12 Jun 2005
By Reginald D. Garrard "the G-man" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Greatest Hits Volume 2 (Audio CD)
A recent PBS special made me dig this one out of the recesses of my music collection and, man, was I glad to rediscover the music. I had forgotten how popular the group was, how intricate were the compositions sung, and how sexy Agnetha and Frida were, even wearing their over-the-top fashions.

It's a shame that the album is not in stock for it features thirteen of the group's best and most memorable pop creations. Culled from the chartmaking years of 1975 - 1978, the 14 tracks are:

1. "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)"
2. "Knowing Me, Knowing YOu"
3. "Take a Chance on Me"
4. "Money, Money, Money"
5. "Rock Me"
6. "Eagle"
7. "Angeleyes"
8. "Dancing Queen" - The group's signature song
9. "Does Your Mother Know" - A really FUN tune
10. "Chiquita"
11. "Summer Night City"
12. "I Wonder (Departure)"

and these two personals favorites,

13. "The Name of the Game"
14. "Thank You for the Music"

The aforementioned special indicated that the group sold over 380,000,000 recordings in its tenure.

Now, that's a lotta plastic!!!
