Biography

The story of how The Stranglers came into existence in the first place, is perhaps atypical of the music industry. No less surprising then, that it’s history too, is unusual. It began in 1973 and that story is both long and complex.

A lengthy discourse covering those formative days has now been covered in some considerable detail in Jet's musical odyssey elsewhere on these pages, which recounts… Read more in Amazon's Stranglers Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Stranglers were early labelled as "punk", but, while they were never short of vitriol and aggression, they were more properly a quintessentially New Wave band. Years of gigging together meant they were exceptionally tight and technically competent from the start, with Dave Greenfield's almost progressive-sounding keyboards somehow sitting easily alongside Hugh Cornwall's needle-sharp guitar and Frenchman Jean-Jacques Burnel's growling bass. Always lovers of the freaky and absurd, they constantly experimented with different approaches in their albums, yet each could usually be relied upon to produce at least one offbeat yet irresistibly catchy and charismatic single. This collection covers their career up to when Hugh Cornwell left the band, but sacrifices breadth of coverage for depth, missing out on some of the more fascinatingly bizarre avenues they took over the years. Nevertheless, the tracks still stretch from the lyrically double-edged hypnotic waltz of "Golden Brown" to the tongue-in-cheek fury of "Something Better Change". The definitive guide to the earlier years remains The Collection, 1977-1982, but albums such as the startlingly stylish and catchy debut Rattus Norvegicus, the punky and attitude-driven No More Heroes and the immensely delicate and tuneful Aural Sculpture (complete with three-piece horn section!) are every bit as good in their own right. --James Swift

Indeed, look at all those peaches. Each and every one is oozing precious juice that will slake your thirst for fine and innovative rock fruit.

There's a couple ("Something Better Change" and "All Day & All of the Night") that are not as ripe as the others, but the rest are firm and brightly coloured with brilliant hooks, imaginative arrangements, and marvellous lyrics. Make sure that you choose the most tasty peach of all, by lucky chance called "Always The Sun".

Tracks one to seven cover the EMI/United Artists years, whilst the remainder cover the band's move to Epic.

Excellent!! 1 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a totally brilliant album of the best of chart hits for those years. You simply forget how good they actually were. It was wonderful to sit back and listen to all their major hits again. It reminds you how talented this band really were. I would thoroughly recommend this album even if you can only remember a few of the hits as the rest will come back to you when you play it. Fantastic, really fantastic!

Great Collection 27 Nov 2004
By Pieter HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a welcome retrospective stretching from their punk heyday (Something Better Change & No More Heroes with its lovely Doors-like organ) down to the more mellow and experimental 80s classics (Golden Brown with its beautiful harpsichord & the amazing Skin Deep, a hypnotic tune with a vaguely eerie feel). Throughout their career, The Stranglers successfully mastered various styles, from aggro rock to gentle ballads. Somehow the album is not entirely satisfying. Songs like Walk On By and 96 Tears didn't age at all well and where's that anthem of aggro Five Minutes? Gripes aside, this I still a proud collection of songs from one of Britain's finest. Another compilation is The Collection 1977 - 1982, which focuses on their early period.
