Reviews

Collection of US film dramas with urban settings. In '8 Mile' (2002), Jimmy Smith (Eminem), aka Rabbit to his friends, has grown up on the wrong side of 8 Mile Road in the industrial city of Detroit. After being dumped by his girlfriend, Rabbit has to move back with his mother (Kim Basinger) and her new boyfriend but gets on with neither of them. His only solace is rapping with the group of DJs and MCs who go under the name of Three One Third. But he is a white boy in a predominantly African-American music culture and there are many who do not like it. Convinced that this is his only hope of getting out of the dead-end life he could end up living, Rabbit perseveres with rapping and is backed up by a new girlfriend (Brittany Murphy) and his friends. In 'Boyz n the Hood' (1991), Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is sent to live with his father in South Central Los Angeles. Despite his earnest attempts to stay out of trouble, he and his friends are drawn into local gang violence. Eventually he finds that he must choose between a life surrounded by crime or his desire to leave the neighbourhood and get a college education. In 'Do the Right Thing' (1989), director Spike Lee studies the racial tensions that take place on the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York. The film charts the increasing tension between a black pizza delivery boy (Spike Lee) and his Italian bosses, the local folk and yuppy newcomers, and builds inexorably to a violent confrontation. In 'Lockdown' (2003), Avery (Richard T. Jones) had it all: beautiful girlfriend Krista (Melissa De Sousa), a young son and a full scholarship ahead of him. But in the blink of an eye it was all taken away. What started as a night out with his buddies ended with the shooting of a cop and Avery behind bars. Finally, in 'Gridlock'd (1996), heroin addicts Stretch (Tim Roth) and Spoon (Tupac Shakur) make a New Year's resolution to kick the habit after their friend and fellow band member Cookie goes into a coma. After stealing some money from crime figure D-Reper (Vondie Curtis-Hall), they go to their dealer and find him murdered. Scavenging drugs and money, they go on the run and attempt to book into a detox clinic, all the while pursued by D-Reper and the police, who are investigating the dealer's death.
