HASH(0x90ae6900) out of 5 stars Truls Mork - definitive renditions of the great cello-and-orchestra repertoire 13 Nov. 2013
By P. Adrian - Published on Amazon.com
This new release by the great Norwegian cellist Truls Mork is a pure delight, for it gathers in a single box of 9 CDs his vast recorded concertante repertoire. Spanning no less than two decades, these recordings appeared in their time as individual releases. They comprise works by C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Schumann, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Bloch, Elgar, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Miaskovsky, Britten, and some contemporary pieces by Henri Dutilleux, Arvo Part or Aaron Jay Kernis. The partners In the recorded performances, only top notch orchestras such as London Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philarmonique de Radio France, Oslo Philharmonic, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Les Violons du Roy, Minnesota Orchestra, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and world class conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Sir Simon Rattle, Paavo Jarvi, Myung-Whun Chung, Bernard Labadie, Eiji Oue and Iona Brown. The captured sound is marvellous throughout.

This extended reissued collection of recording by Truls Mork is a precious synthesis of the cello-and-orchestra repertoire delivered by an artist at the top of his musical powers.
Highly recommended!

P.S. I must say that Truls Mork is one of my favourite musicians of the day, I heard him live playing Dvorak Cello Concerto with Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under James Gaffigan last September in Bucharest during the George Enescu Festival. His Domenico Montagnana instrument sounded in a marvellous fashion in the splendid acoustics of the Romanian Athenee. Overwhelming achievement!

\Norwegian cellist Truls Mork is one of my favorite classical performers. He plays in the Russian, not German, style: not afraid to bend tone to enhance emotion across full bowed passages. His instrument, almost three hundred years and from Venice, is possessed of a golden, often plangent tone, and Mork handles the most difficult passages with apparent ease. This collection, all the cello concertos Mork recorded for Erato records between it was done with care because there is no diminution in sound quality.

C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Schumann, Bruch, Bloch, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Britten, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Miaskovsky, Part, Dutilleux, and Kernis. That’s a long list extending back to the eighteenth century (Bach, Haydn) and up to today (Part, Kernis). I have favorites and un-favorites among the list but every piece is handled with respect. Listening to all nine CDs with few breaks as I did is a good way to come down with cello-litis, but piece by piece, you will find no better renditions of most or all of these pieces. My favorites? The two concertos by C.P.E. Bach and the two by Haydn (ravishing slow movements on both!), Schumann, Dvorak (probably my favorite piece in the collection), a good Elgar, a lively Prokofiev. Pieces I will not listen to often are the entire ninth CD (two compositions by Kernis), the Part composition (Pro et contra) and Dutilleux concerto on disc 8. I'm not crazy about the Tchaikovsky variations either. It’s not that these pieces are not good. I just don’t like them –the Part concerto is too much of a hodge-podge, the compositions by Kernis and Dutilleux aren't all that interesting to me.

HASH(0x90ae84a4) out of 5 stars A Great Box Set With Some Minor Omissions 22 Feb. 2015
By David Freiberger - Published on Amazon.com
This is a great box set of some of the finest works for cello and orchestra played by one of the worlds greatest cellists. My only minor quibble is that the concertos by Saint Saens, Walton, Lutoslawski, Bliss and Finzi were not yet recorded by Mork so they are not included here. Other than that, this box set is strongly recommended.
