Over concentration on early material,
By John R (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

As a fan of Argent from their In Deep album onwards, especially during the time when Russ Ballard took over more of the songwriting, I found the majority of the earlier songs on this album ok but not as good as their later material. This is a personal view only and for anyone wanting an introduction to the band, this is as good a product as any.

What You Need To Know,
By Cary E. Mansfield - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Greatest (Audio CD)
After The Zombies broke up, keyboardist / songwriter Rod Argent formed a new band in 1969, which incorporated more classical, jazz, and art rock influences, in line with Argent's musical training. The group's other members were lead singer / guitarist / songwriter Russ Ballard, bassist Jim Rodford, and drummer Bob Henrit.
Russ Ballard also wrote "God Gave Rock `N' Roll to You," later covered by Kiss, and "Liar," a top 10 hit for Three Dog Night in 1971. Contains the top five smash "Hold Your Head Up," as well as Argent's versions of "Liar" and "God Gave Rock `N' Roll to You." This is the first Argent hits collection since the eight-track 1976 Anthology: The Best of Argent, and is the only one to exclusively feature the single mixes of their hits along with popular album tracks. This 18-track collection includes 10 original single mixes that are appearing on CD for the first time. In addition, none of these versions is available on iTunes. Includes a live reworking of The Zombies classic "Time of the Season." 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:

It is Argent. Remember them? I do, so I needed this album. Hold Your Head Up is the main deal.

What Rod did after the Zombies...,

Great expanded (from my old vinyl Argent Greatest Hits) collection. Highlights: "Hold Your Head Up" of course (but also search for the version by Aussie part-time supergroup "The Party Boys"), a piledriving "Liar", monster-groove on "Thunder and Lightning", and the original version of "God gave Rock'n'Roll to you" covered by KISS. The rest is a mixed bag, from pleasantly jazzy "Lothlorien" (somebody make a Playlist of "Lord of The Rings- referencing songs) to plodding "Sweet Mary". "Man For All Seasons" reminds me of The Alan parsons project. The live "Time Of The Season" has some balls, but mostly makes me want to listen to the original.
