I initially bought this as an alternative to basically the same product in smaller pre-cut shapes, with the intention of using them as labels on some glass jars, as this product gives a lot more coverage for a lesser price if you're prepared to do the cutting out yourself.
As these jars don't go through the dishwasher, it's very suitable for purpose and has worked well.
I've also used it to:
- Add labels to other glass jars and bottles
- Add a panel to the door of a large kitchen unit
- Cover the glass in a picture frame (making essentially a framed blackboard)
- Cover a panel on a wooden box used for vegetable storage in the kitchen
- Cover a piece of cardboard cut from packaging
- Cover one side of a Joseph Joseph cutting board set
It's worked perfectly for all applications except the cutting board, which was to be expected as the board isn't smooth.
The back of the foil is squared, which helps when cutting to size.
It's a little tricky to apply, but since it's low-tack it's easy to peel back and re-apply to remove bubbles and avoid wrinkles. If you've ever used sticky-back plastic, you know what to do. Obviously it's not going to stick well to any non-smooth or greasy surface, so if you're thinking of putting it on the wall directly, that's something to consider.
I've used both normal chalk and chalk pens on the blackboard. Neither erases 100% with a damp cloth, but normal chalk is much better. The only thing to be careful of is a sharp edge on the chalk (or a chalk pencil), as it can leave an indentation if you press too hard.
I'm entirely happy with the product and intend to purchase some more. However, I would make the comment that I wouldn't choose this for a permanent, heavy-duty blackboard; but for making accent pieces or livening up a kitchen until a new one can be put in, it works wonderfully.
