For 12 years, Chris Fallows has photographed the great white sharks that reside off the coast of Capetown, South Africa - the only sharks in the world known to breach. 4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Photography 19 May 2010
Format:Hardcover
A really stunning book with great photographs, the only reason I did not give it 5 stars was that some of the best pictures were ruined by being on a 2 page spread with some of the detail being lost in the binding in the middle.

Author Chris Fallows, pioneer photographer of South Africa's breaching Great White Sharks has produced this incredible book that documents in stunning photography the most fearsome, beautiful, awe-inspiring sharks of them all - the Great White Shark.

He intertwines the amazing photography with his own personal story of how his fascination for these incredible creatures began, grew and with his wife Monique blossomed into the life-long passion it has become. You cannot help but to be impressed not only with the quality of the photography but also be blown away by the sheer beauty and as the book title aptly highlights, the majesty of the Great White Shark.

Although as the title suggests the book predominantly focuses on the Great White, a handful of photographs of other species of sharks including the Whale Shark, Blue Shark, Mako, Oceanic White Tip, Bull Shark, Bronze Whaler, Ragged Tooth Shark, Scalloped Hammerhead are featured alluding to Fallows' obvious passion for all sharks.

Also highlighted is the disproportionate fear and disregard too many people have for these environmentally critical and endangered creatures. Chris Fallows touches on how unlikely people are to become shark prey even in the Great White Shark hunting grounds of South Africa!
Across the world sharks are being massively over-fished and in particular in the Far East the barbaric practice of shark finning (landing the sharks on ships, cutting off their fins and throwing the sharks still alive back into the sea) is still going on merely to provide wealthy visitors of restaurants the opportunity to purchase a $200 bowl of Shark Fin soup - that without added chicken stock would be absolutely tasteless.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Spectacular... 28 Dec 2009
By J. Deeter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
While the actual pictures in this book are wonderful - the lay-out of the book leaves a lot to be desired. Many of the most gripping photos in this book are split between two pages resulting in the spine of book badly affecting the impact of the photographs.

Here are two examples - on pages 22 & 23 and page 26 & 27 a massive great white is breaching the surface - HOWEVER - the spine of the book cuts the shark in HALF!!! This occurs nearly 40 times in the book!!!!

Shame on the publisher!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Might be the greatest book cover...EVER. Only thing missing is 3-D glasses. 10 Aug 2010

Found it in a Borders store...for $50. Found it here for...under $20. Me = 1, Borders = 0.

This book is a very large book, so the pictures really make a bigger impact as they are clear, well-shot photos. The great white shark is beautifully captured, and the author, Fallows, shows evidence that these sharks aren't out to get you every time you step in the ocean. Every turned page brought a "Wow" or an ominous silence. FYI, it also covers the Mako shark, along with a few others, but by the cover, you can see who hogs the spotlight here.

Yes, I like sharks.

I bought it for my nephew for his 8th birthday, and he also shares my enthusiasm for oceanic life. This book was an insanely smart buy and it may be one of the best purchases I've ever made on Amazon. Borders has a clear plastic wrapping over it if you find it there, so you can't thumb through it (arrgh), but trust me---if you like sharks, you will very much enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pictures of Great White Sharks 29 Oct 2010
By Sharklady - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
As an avid viewer of Shark Week on the Discovery channel, this book is basically identical to what was seen during that week a couple of years ago. Nothing new here, but I am an admirer of Chris Fallows, the work he does on behalf of sharks, and the beautiful and breathtaking pictures he takes. If it weren't for the fact that I have seen photos like these before (or others similar to them), I would have given it a 5-star review, but also probably wouldn't have bought it. I'm sure that is why a potential buyer is not able to view the contents of the book! If I had seen what was in it before I purchased it, I would have passed on buying it. It was encased in plastic and, therefore, is probably not returnable!

This book is a total waste of time and your money. DO NOT BUY IT! Nothing in here is original or even worth seeing, and the writing is poor.
