Product Description

Each chapter covers an individual province, incorporating the history and legends related to the wall in that area; there is also coverage of the main cities that act as a base for exploration. A range of cultural information - Chinese food, customs, history, politics and economy -provides the essential background to gain an insight into the local way of life.

Wall worth it! 2 Mar 2007
Format:Paperback
Excellent. This book was the ideal travel companion for my husband and I on our recent trip to see the Wall. Solid on explanations and directions - superb menu translations for the "Hot Pot" - kept us well fed even in the more remote areas. Si Ma monestary is a must see - and my only (small) critique is that the book might include a bit more on similar locations. Western China isn't easy even for the intrepid traveller, but bringing this guide certainly helped.

Pompous twaddle 31 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this for my recent trip to Beijing and can only say it was a waste of my luggage allowance. The section on Beijing is out of date, and seems to be based on some fantasy that the modernisation of China is somehow ruining the charm of this fascinating city. The sections on the Great Wall also seem to reflect a belief that a visit to anything other than Badalang is the only "true" wall experience. The authors of this book seem to still be living in a backpacker daydream which sees the world through an authentic v tourist filter. My trip to Badalang with a personal Nepalese tour guide was a thoroughly enjoyable day which I will recall with pleasure for years to come. I recommend the Berlitz Beijing Pocket Guide as a far better investment.

Recently visited Northern China. This guide is useful and informative if you are taking an independent trip, that is, not a package tour.
