Review

Very thorough and would suit walking enthusiasts or anyone who simply likes to learn about intriguing places. Mr Sale's descriptions are accompanied by his own dramatic photographs. (Westmorland Gazette )

A book to pour over at home on cold winter nights - the stunning photographs and descriptions will motivate planning for trips in the coming summer. (Strider )

Peppered with stunning photos, and Richard Sale gives a highly informed commentary as you would expect from an award-winning writer who's also a leading glaciologist. (WALK magazine )

In this wonderful, sumptuous book Richard Sale has given us his selection of just two dozen of his favourites.. And what a feast! … the hundreds of quite superb photographs are the real joy of this work, not just of the mountains but also the close-up shots of the plants, birds, animals and butterflies of each region. This must be the perfect Christmas gift. (Irish Mountain Log )

Magnificent photographs capture the pictorial charm of each chosen route and its affiliated wildlife, expertly conveying the flavour of what each walk has to offer. For armchair travellers and those planning future expeditions, such a guide will hopefully bring both inspiration and many hours of pleasure. (Good Book Guide )

A must for all outdoor types, and anyone with an interest in the most stunning lanndscapes of Europe. (Living Spain )

A splendid tome; a true coffee table hardback generously illustrated throughout with richard's own photographs, a number of which had me gasping with delight… This is a book to drool over; to argue with your mates over. It's a book of dreams and challenges. All you need is sufficient holidays to tackle them all. (TGO: The Great Outdoors )

Product Description

From the high-level route across the Pyrenees to the scenic Kerry Way in Ireland, from a descent through the Samaria Gorge in Crete to an ascent of Helvellyn in the Lake District, this book identifies the greatest walks in Europe: twelve of the best long-distance walks (taking from four to fifteen days to complete) and twelve extraordinary day walks.

Among the long-distance walks are the incomparable GR20 in Corsica - a coast-to-coast journey through jagged peaks and deep, forested valleys; the ancient Ridgeway across English downland; the Jungfrau Horseshoe in Austria, which visits the best viewpoints of the Bernese Oberland's most famous alpine peaks; and the Kungsleden, or Royal Trail, through the Swedish wilderness. Short walks include the Snowdon Horseshoe, one of the finest mountain walks in Britain; a walk through the Verdon Gorge in France, Europe's equivalent of the Grand Canyon; and an excursion to the Inaccessible Pinnacle on the romantic Isle of Skye in Scotland.

Richard Sale describes each route, explaining noteworthy features of all kinds and giving historical and cultural details as well as useful information about maps, statistics and the like. His lavish and spectacular photographs of landscapes and wildlife capture the walks' spirit and character. The book will be a boon and a delight to walkers, inspiring them to relive past adventures and tempting them to plan expeditions for the future.

Wonderful photograph; thought provoking content; ultimately disappointing.

The selection of walks is clearly individual. No one in England would pick the Ridgeway as England's great walk - Pennine Way maybe, South West Coast Path probably, Cotswold way perhaps. How could one not pick the Camino de Santiago de Compostella as Spain's great walk? For goodness sake, it is a UNESCO recognised world wonder, an EU cultural icon and it is a great walk.

Maybe this is an impossible book to produce. Certainly this does not live up to the title although it is of some interest.
