Redford stars as Waldo Pepper, a hotshot pilot in the early Twenties who earns his living by barnstorming and blagging his way around the USA pretending to be a wartime ace. He teams up with friends and tours as a wing-walking act before tragedy strikes and his wings are clipped. He regains his pilot's licence and turns to being a stunt pilot for movies. The final scene of him and another pilot duelling in the skies with no quarter given leaves the viewer with the question "so what happens next?". The film is well-acted and beautifully shot, and there are some powerful scenes, with a well-portrayed recreation of Twenties America. A must for Redford fans.

This is a wonderfully balanced and charming movie, it's got all the lighthearted comedic moments wrapped up in telling the very serious tale of how dangerous skilled flying when stunts were life threatening and devastating results. Robert Redford lights up the screen in each appearance, he plays a nuanced and truly romantic role. If I sound biased, it's not without some credence, the flight sequences are wonderful, some scenes may have had simulations, but, the high octane stunts are thrill a minute.

The fact that in the UK the title graphics on the front DVD cover are in German makes me feel truly European.

Finally. A rare DVD to find, and it is a shame.
This tiny adventure-drama classic, starring a very young and radiant Robert Redford should have received a better treatment, with special inserts and documentaries, but the movie is all you get.

Yet, the framing of the movie is correct (2.35:1), the colors are vivid, if not a bit over-saturated and the sound is acceptable.

Don't be fooled by the German title (Tollkuehne Flieger), this is in fact "The Great Waldo Pepper" and the first soundtrack is in English, although you have a German language track included.

Since I usually prefer to watch all movies in their original cinematic format (which means with the original movie bars on top and below), or if you prefer "as they should be seen", I actually haven't paid attention whether or not it has a 16:9 anamorphic resolution. Nevertheless, since the scope of this picture is flying spectacle, the cropped version would only lose out on scenery and detail, which in this version come through splendidly.

Get it if you can, and if not, cross your fingers and hope that the Studios will soon dish up such classics again.

Well worth the money.
