If the Turning Points series first and foremost wonderful story telling was taught as a school history course it would excite a new generation. --Christopher Lee

Much of interest and value in this short collection of essays. 2.0 out of 5 stars Great Turning Points in British History, 19 May 2009
By W. E. Rimington - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Disappointing; an anticlimax of a book. I thought Michael Wood's association with the book would have guaranteed its pedigree but no such luck.
I found it shallow in content and rather superficial. Also the selection of events was very arguable though to be fair it cannot have been an easy choice.
All in all nothing to shout about.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you didn't think British history was anglocentric..., 24 Jul 2009
By R. C. Gray (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
...then take a look at this. Umpteen chapters on the most obvious, hackneyed and mythologised moments in English history, most of them ocurring before there even was a British nation to speak of.
What I find utterly stupefying is that, when reviewing the chapter headings of this book, its editors did not immediately see such a grotesque and idiotic error staring them in the face.

"Britain", as the gaudy cover clearly suggests, means Great Britain - a country created by the Act of Union in 1707. The subheading "The 20 Events That Made The Nation" again states that this book is about the Britain, not the countries that went on to become part of Britain, and certainly not chielfy about just one of them, in periods hundreds of years prior to Britain coming existence. So we have the Danish conquest...of England. The Norman conquest...of England. The repulsion of the Spanish Armada which was trying to invade...England. One chapter (from the 14 out of 20 that are about periods before Britain was even created) is about Scotland. It might as well be called "Token Scottish Chapter". And if you're Welsh, well, going by this book, your country didn't much exist.

But here's the best bit. The real kicker. An ommission so glaring it really does make you wonder what, if any, grasp of history the makers of this book are in posession of. What event, what turning point, just off the top of your head, would you think might be included in a run-down of the most crucial points in the making of Britain? Maybe, the actual point at which it came into existence? Er, no. Apparently not. The Act of Union of 1707, THE defining moment in British history, isn't in this book. What about the Union of the Crowns in 1603, when a (Scottish) king became the first monarch of both Scotland and England, paving the way for the forging of a new nation a century later? Forget it.

In fact, any historical moment prior to Union when the constituent parts of Britain moved closer together, which might have legtimised 14 of the 20 chapters being about periods when Britain didn't exist, are ignored. But hey, there's a chapter about American independence, which makes perfect sense. Except not really, as that's about the making of the American nation, not the British one. Oh well.

It's hard to think of a more misguided - and stupid - endeavour than this one. Most depressingly, and distressingly, it only goes to show how little progress has been made in redressing the Anglocentric distortion of British history. Many would have assumed it had long since been purged from modern scholarship. But this book shows that it is alive, well and happily perpetuating the myth that the terms England and Britain are interchangeble. A truly pathetic offering, which only serves to damage the reputations of BBC History and Michael Wood.
