3.0 out of 5 stars honest and fresh, 6 April 2002
By A Customer
This first album by the belgian rock band has an honest, cheerful feel to it. The singer Sara Gettens' vocals have a gravelly quality that adds depth to the songs, which range from perkiness in"I smoke a lot" to sweet melancholy in "Elegia". Sara's brother Gert is the lead guitarist and the family link has undoubtedly added to the album's intimate atmosphere. When listening to this album, i felt both uplifted and touched. The lyrics are simple, with a slightly "foreign" touch which only adds to their charm. The album lacks grandeur or dazzle, it's more like a breath of fresh air in today's over-sophisticated rock-milieu. A hint of greatness to come...

4.0 out of 5 stars Calm and intimate with spotlight on Sarah's voice, 7 May 2004
By Rui Bento "scott" (Lisbon, Portugal) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I discovered this album only after being an avid K's Choice listener for quite a while. «The Great Subconscious Club» is K's Choice's debut album, back from the time the band was still a small Belgium based band named «The Choice».

If you've heard the bands following albums, you'll probably notice that this one naturally sounds a little less mature, being the band's first record. Nevertheless, the Betten brothers made this album work like a charm, with remarkable lyrics that could easily go into a poetry book and the Sarah Betten's voice being as great as always. Calm and beautifully heart-felt songs like «My Heart» or «Winter» contrast with the light and melodic song that would be perfect played by the fire, «Breakfast».

I will rate it 4* since i believed that K's Choice improved from album to album - with each one being better than the previous - and i'll be keeping the top rating for those.

4.0 out of 5 stars great debut, 28 April 2004
this is great debut album from the Belgiun band and i have to admit it wasthe last of the 4 studio albums that i listened to and thought there mightbe a bit of rough production or struggling vocal but i couldn't have beenmore wrong.
highlight tracks are My Heart and I Smoke Alot with theslower track Breakfast and the piano angst of What the Hell is Loveoffering up some chillout time. Laughing as i Pray is one of the besttracks to end an album that i have heard in a while. I still dont knowwhy this band has not broke the mainstream but since they are taking a'break' from their musical duties i think this is one band which we wilnot see on the cover of Q magazine.
Get this album, if you are into accoustic numbers with an element ofangsty rock and gritty husky vocals, it will make your day muchbetter!
Key tracks: Breakfast, My Heart, Laughing as i Pray
