Product Description

Product Description
'Grinnell perhaps knew more about Plains Indians and the Indian wars than any non-military white man of his time. He knew many of the Cheyenne and Pawnee warriors...Because so much of this volume is based on material gathered directly from participants, including Pawnees as well as the Norths, it is an important source that can be enjoyed by scholar and general reader' - "American Indian Quarterly". From 1864 until 1877, the Pawnee Scouts, a unique U.S. Army battalion of about a hundred Pawnees, were scouts and soldiers during the height of the Plains Indian wars and earned the respect of prominent generals in the West, including George Crook, Eugene Carr, and Ranald Mackenzie. They were commanded by the famous "fighting Norths." Originally published in 1928, "Two Great Scouts and Their Pawnee Battalion" is based upon Luther's firsthand recollections. The Pawnee Scouts and the Norths helped protect the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad, scouted for the Connor Expedition in 1865 and along the Republican River in 1866, fought the Cheyenne at the Battle of Plum Creek, directed the Carr Expedition that led to the destruction of the Cheyenne Dog Soldier village at Summit Springs, fought in Crook's Campaign against Dull Knife in 1876-1877, and assisted with the campaign following Custer's defeat. The North brothers became national celebrities, entering a ranching partnership with Buffalo Bill Cody on the Dismal River in central Nebraska. George Bird Grinnell, noted anthropologist and ethnologist, wrote numerous books and was a founder of the Audubon Society. James T. King is the author of "War Eagle: A Life of General Eugene A. Carr".

5.0 out of 5 stars A Unique Military Unit, 5 Sep 2001
By A Customer
George Bird Grinnell is in one point different from other historians of the Old West. He personnaly knew many of the celebrities of that age, and what is written in his books are founded upon their stories. Major Frank North and his brother, Captain Luther North /Grinnell's close friend/ commanded this unique force of indian auxiliaries. Unique - because they never lost a fight or even a single life during the long line of their battles and skirmishes. They patrolled the building of the railroad and fought in major battles like the one of the Summit Springs. Also an important part of the book is the short history of the Pawnee nation andit serves as well as a biography of the North brothers. And all this is in the highly readable style of George Bird Grinnell with full of Westernisms.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 25 Sep 2008
By Brian V. Burford (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a very interesting and informative book. It captures the flavour and the realism of the Indian wars very well indeed. There is much detail and a lot of information about this unique battalion. Scouts were very important in the winning of the Indian wars, their local knowledge combined with their hatred of a common enemy, made for an effective force. My only criticism is that the Pawnee come across as so superior fighters to the rest of the tribes that the Cheyenne and the Sioux come across as brave, but incompetent foes. We know that not to be true, as they drove out the Pawnee who sought protection from the whites. Other than that, a great book and essential reading for anyone interested in the American Indian wars and the Plains Indian.
