Product Description

Fought on an unprecedented scale - in the sky, on the land, and in the water - the First World War marked the end of an old military order and the beginning of truly mechanized warfare. This book surveys the period that began with Bismarck's Prussia and ended with the creation of the League of Nations. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Accurate and unbiased synopsis of World War I 17 Dec. 2013
By Charles Ashbacher - Published on
Format: Paperback
With millions of combatants and sixteen million combat deaths over a period of 4+ years, no book of 177 pages could possibly delve very deeply into the events immediately before, during and after the First World War. However, as a synopsis to be used as a history text with the supplemental book of maps, this book is very good. One fact that simplifies the examination of the tactics used in the war is that the ones used for most of the battles on the western front were as follows:

*) Massive artillery barrage of the enemy at the point of attack, sometimes lasting days.
*) Masses of heavily laden troops leaving their trenches and walking across open ground to attack the enemy.
*) Enemy responds with artillery and machine gun fire, annihilating a large number of the attackers, defeating them.
*) Repeat

Millions of men were killed in this manner, with the movement of the front lines sometimes measured in thousands of casualties per foot of gain. This aspect of the war is of course covered in an excellent manner.
One aspect of the war that is often neglected in other history books but covered here is the action on the African and Middle East fronts. Given the relatively miniscule number of men involved on those fronts, they are often dismissed as trivial. Yet, the modern world is still struggling to deal with the consequences of the British and French actions in places such as Iraq and wider Palestine.
This is a great book for classes presenting an overview of what was then called the Great War. Used in combination with the companion atlas of battlefield maps, this complex event is effectively summarized in an unbiased way.

A comprehensive overview of a little understood, yet influential period in history. Focused primarily on the events in Europe, it does provide context for the war's impact on World History. This is one of a series of military histories prepared by the United States Military Academy at West Point.
