A magnificent panoramic view of a great city 2 April 2013
By othoniaboys - Published on
Format: Hardcover
No historical novel, even written by a genius, could possibly match this all-encompassing description of London and its inhabitants during the 1700s. Every possible facet of life is covered. This book was six years in the making and has a cast of thousands. The past is brought to life in such a way that no student in a history course will ever again be able to say that history is boring.

Brilliant but highly detailed - not for beginners! 13 Oct. 2014
By Suzanne Cross - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I agree that this iso possibly the most detailed and best-written novel of London in the 18th century that I have read, and I took it on a recent trip to London with me (the hardcover got consistently heavier as I walked further, it seemed). However, I do think that if you have no background whatever in English history, it would be a little tough to start on this volume - it's more for students and enthusiasts who have a little grounding in the subject so that they recognize the names of Dean Swift or Addison, Daniel Defoe or Horace Walpole, so that this wonderfully detailed history can broaden and enrich their understanding.

Tremendous 21 Jun. 2013
By Tom G - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I truly enjoyed this book. I thought it was a fascinating look at the development of London in the 18th century. I particularly enjoyed how the book was organized--it focused in great detail on all aspects of life in London. This is not your traditional history book (which is high praise)!
