since the start of the twentieth century, their authors and their themes.
Over 150 essential poems are accompanied by a brief discussion by poetry
authority Michael Schmidt that provides insight, observations and the
historical context for each poet and their work.
50 English-language poets are explored, including Thomas Hardy, A E
Housman, W B Yeats, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Frost, Edward Thomas, D H
Lawrence, Ezra Pound, T S Eliot, Wilfred Owen, Robert Graves, John
Betjeman, W H Auden, Dylan Thomas, Philip Larkin, Allen Ginsberg, Ted
Hughes, Derek Walcott, Sylvia Plath, Seamus Heaney and James Fenton.
With an introduction that suggests way to appreciate the poems, and a

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasure, 14 Jul 2007
This book is a wonderful introduction to poetry. It has a short biography of each of the 50 20th C poets chosen and the a selection of their poems. There are a number of poets I have never heard of. It is beautifully produced and a real pleasure to own.A fabulous present.

This is a rare book and one not to miss if you have any interest in language and poetry. It will delight, entertain and seriously educate you, while at the same time spur you on to want to learn more. Michael Schmidt is an extraordinarily good writer; he has the knack of writing in a very engaging way that leaves you feeling very satisfied indeed with what you have read. You feel that you are in the presence of a highly knowledgeable enthusiast. Don't hesitate to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it as a Gift: buy it for a friend, buy it for yourself, 20 Oct 2008
By ilinkcs "ilinkcs" (Johannesburg South Africa) - See all my reviews
This is the perfect gift for anyone who loves poetry.

It is the perfect book to buy for yourself if you like Poetry :)

In it you will find ~
50 of the most important (English language) Poets
150 of their poems, an average of 3 per poet
A brief bio, and a conversation about the value/role of their poetry
A fine black and White photograph of each poet, something of a work of art in itself

This is a reference I think I will find myself turning to regularly; for all the reasons listed above.
