This book is the only book you should buy if new to mahjong. I bought several others....all confusing. This book has absolutely beautiful colour pictures of tiles, superbly presented, clear to read, to re-refer to. It has fascinating background information. It clearly explains all salient points. It describes variations in America,Japan,China,UK,Holland,France,Germany and Italy in interesting clear ways, you can just enjoy reading. The two greatest assets are the Appendix 'quick mahjong reference' and Handy doubling table for basic mahjong. All in all an absolute pleasure. If you are new to Mahjong, interested to find out relevant history this is the ONLY book to buy!!!!

A note to the publishers, You must use 'Search inside' facility on Amazon, this book is beautiful and clear and would fly off the shelves if prospective purchasers could look inside!!!!

Since I started playing mahjong almost 20 years ago I have used 2 books - 'A Mah Jong Handbook' by Eleanor Noss Whitney and 'The Complete Book of Mah-Jongg' by A D Millington - as my reference bibles for mahjong. These have, for many years, been the only comprehensively digestible books on the subject worth possessing (with possibly the little Know the Game book by Headley and Seeley as an easy reference for the British game).
This, however, has now changed with the appearance in English of 'The Great Mahjong Book' by Jelte Rep. I would recommend this unreservedly to any serious mahjong player. It reviews mahjong as it is played in 8 countries and includes a brief section on the 'new' (1998) official Chinese International Rules as published by the World Mahjong Organisation (WMO). In addition it is written in a lively, interesting manner containing many entertaining anecdotes and snippets of unusual information and is beautifully and colourfully illustrated.
This has now joined my ever-growing library of books on mahjong and will take pride of place as one of 4 books which I shall be recommending to my current group of mahjong players in the North Norfolk U3A!
