A great yarn! 2 Oct 2007
Format:DVD
I had never seen this before but Fess Parker was a childhood hero of mine. Davy Crockett was a massive craze in the U.K. with young boys singing the famous theme tune and wearing Davy Crockett style, coonskin hats with long tails.
On the strength of this vague memory I decided to buy this, though I really wanted "Westward Ho The Wagons". I was not disappointed. I was thrilled. This is an outstanding adventure story which portrays important human values - couage, ingenuity and persistance.
I was slightly let down by the unexpected ending on first viewing but on further viewings came to appreciate the honour and nobility shown and now think it a supurb finish.
I recommend this to everyone without hesitation

Picture quality 24 Feb 2008
By johng
Format:DVD
This is a great feature film let down by the very poor quality of the picture.
The picture shakes and shimmers, some parts are anything but sharp with blurred movement in places. Not even up to VHS standard and certianly not of broadcast quality. Disney should hang their head in shame at turning out a DVD like this.

Typical Disney adventure 14 April 2008
Format:DVD
This is, in effect, a "straight" version of Buster Keaton's 1927 picture "The General", about Union soldiers in the Civil War stealing a locomotive in Georgia to aid the Union assault on Chatanooga TN. As John J. Andrews, Parker proves that there's (at least some) life after Davy Crockett and Jeffrey Hunter makes a worthy adversary. That's perhaps the best way to describe this 1956 Disney film, worthy. A few exciting chase sequences liven up a film that on the whole does little more than tell a historical story reasonably well. For me, the real stars were the Civil War vintage locomotives, but none of those used in the film were the real ones involved, despite the fact that "The General" has survived and is now preserved a few hundred yards from where it was stolen. Better historical accuracy than Keaton's original and some interesting chase sequences, but not a great deal more to recommend it.
