Product Description

This is a book for anyone who enjoys music and wants to find out what is really going on in the symphonies of Mozart, the string quartets of Beethoven, the orchestral works of Debussy and Ravel, or the contemporary pieces of Messiaen. With Owen Lee as your guide, the intricacies of classical forms and key relationships are rendered not only intelligible but also meaningful, the music itself becomes life-enhancing, and the great composers come vividly to life.

I've always loved music. All kinds of music. Although I have been playing Blues and Rock guitar for years (44 to be precise, ouch) This has not stopped my deep rooted enjoyment of the composers from the Baroque and Romantic. But although I would consider myself reasonably knowledgeable about Muddy, Elmore and many others, I have remained woefully ignorant about the forms and stories of Beethoven and Bach. Although like any gigging player I have spent hour after hour thinking about, learning and analysing the music of the blues and rock greats, I have always let classical music just flow over and through me. This book is an attempt to rectify some of that. It's working for me and could for you.

bravissimo! 24 Feb. 2006

Father Owen Lee, famous to so many grateful listeners over the decades of Metropolitan Opera broadcasts for his pitch-perfect reflections on opera composers and their works, now does the same for orchestral music. In this handy, invitating volume, complete with illustrative CDs, he offers us a lifetime of rewarding listening. It might well have been titled "An Opera Lover's Guide to Orchestral Music"---Bravissimo!
