Several polished crystals are buried in a block of plaster of paris. A hammer and pokey double ended tool and a stiff brush are included to chip away the plaster to reveal the jewels inside. Put a bit of newspaper down underneath as doing it is dusty, but all part of the fun for our 6yr old boy. We all wanted a go, me, 9 yr old daughter and husband all couldn't resist it! In real terms it doesn't take all that long to chisel them out, but it kept my son quiet for hours at a time, he was really engrossed! Try the glow in the dark dinosaur, dino dig I think it's called as that's really good too.

I chose this for my son's 6th birthday, based on reviews, and was not disappointed.
At first, my son complained because the block of plaster is very hard and takes a lot of hammering, with patience and persistance. This is one of the reasons I chose it for him, because I thought it would do him good to have something that might teach him to persevere. It needed my help to begin with.
However, once he found a bit of his first crystal, he was hooked. He still needed a bit of help, but eventually, he was stuck in, hammering and chiselling for hours and whooping with joy every time he found a new crystal, or got one out. He was delighted with his little bag to put them in and couldn't wait to show his finds to friends and nanna. He has even asked me if he can have another one for Christmas so he can collect more crystals.
I am very impressed with the quality of this toy. The crystals look very nice and all the tools provided are great and can be used again for something else. There is a lot of dust made, so watch out. We set it up on a tray, on a table in the garden on a nice day, and the tray had to be emptied out frequently.

Bought this for my nine year old daughter who loves fossils and rocks. She loved digging the minerals out but it was a bit hard going at times. My older two daughters were quite happy to help her. She is now carrying the minerals round in the little pouch provided and has asked for another kit for Christmas.

This kit kept my very active 5-year-old occupied for hours and even days. We give it as birthday presents to all his friends. I've bought about 12 kits so far.

This kept my four year old son and his slightly batty grandmother absorbed together for hours on Christmas Day. That's got to be worth £7.50 of anyone's money! The idea of mining for real crystals really captured my son's imagination.

Yes, it's a bit messy, but nothing a hoover and a damp cloth won't sort. The block of plaster is just the right hardness - it's tough enough to be a challenge, but not so difficult as to be discouraging. The pack says it contains eight crystals, but ours had 17 in, and each one was greeted with cheers from the mining duo.

This is one of those rare toys that's suitable for both sexes and a wide range of ages, so I've ordered a couple more to keep in stock for emergency birthday presents etc. Highly recommended! Now, if they only made one with real fossils in.......

bought for my 7 year old grandson, I had to help him chip at stone, but he was excited and loved it, thought the crystals would be worth a lot of money! Make sure you put stone on some form mat/sheet to catch bits of rock and dust. Good buy. Order in plenty of time if it is for a gift, mine came by royal mail and took a week, which was too late for his birthday.

To be honest this was bought as a last minute addition to my daughters other birthday presents. Given some of the horrific reviews on other Science Museum branded products I wasn't expecting a great deal. However I must admit to being pleasantly surprised.

The kit came with all the necessary implements to 'mine' your crystals, my only critism here is that the saw did blunt towards the end of the project but everything else functioned well. Overall the quality was good and the cards to display your crystals was a nice touch.

I was expecting the block containing the gems to be rather easy to break making it too easy to collect the crystals, however this wasn't the case, my 8 year old daughter was kept amused for several hours and enjoyed finally mounting and displaying what she had found.

Overall I think this was an excellent purchase and good value.
