Bought this for my 8-year old who is studying Ancient Egypt at school this term. He and his little sister (3) loved excavating the treasures, which took several hours of chipping and brushing away (you get a plastic hammer/ scraping tool and a paintbrush). I was rather disappointed that, unlike the images on the box, the 'treasures' are not shiny gold metal effect pieces, but in fact rather dull brownish-gold-coloured plastic; the images are very misleading in this regard. Nonetheless the children enjoyed their 'dig'.
The mess they produced was phenomenal! Be warned; if you buy this you will have plaster dust absolutely everywhere; the slightest flick of the brush sends a little shower of it into the air. We used a large tray with a teatowel on it, and had to throw away the teatowel afterwards.
Once you have finished excavating, you find 4 game counters and a di within the mummy case. You can then play the enclosed game which gently teaches a few Egyptian facts, and which both children enjoyed and have played repeatedly since.
Overall it was a great themed activity to accompany the school topic, and I'd recommend it if you don't mind the mess!

I picked up this products (x2) for my daughters of 6 and 8 after a trip to Egypt. It provided a good two afternoon's worth of discovery - with plenty of scraping for hidden beads and other treasures. The opportunity to then make necklaces, read stories, and mould items was an added bonus - helped no doubt by their recent adventures. We picked up the set half price - so that helped - but even at RRP I think the product is good value - and definitely educational.

The box contains one plaster block with a buried mummy and four Egyptian "treasures", a digging tool, a brush, and the Egyptian Tomb adventure board game with four Egyptian game checkers and dice. Also, there are detailed instructions and interesting facts about Ancient Egypt. The idea is excellent, but I was somewhat disappointed with the quality; the game board is by rather thin paper and the plastic treasures are very cheap looking.
I bought this for my ten year old nephew and it was a great success. When he unwrapped the gift, he was really excited and immediately wanted to play with it. I was amazed by his precision and skill when we started the excavation, but as he had some similar toys before, he said that the digging tool could have been better. Also, we where both disappointed when we discovered that the game checkers and the dice were not buried separately, but were inside the mummy case, so there were fewer things to dig out than we expected. It must be noted that the excavation takes some time and although this includes a board game, the child will have to dig out the parts before playing. Also, you might like to get gloves and other protective gear for the child and the house, as the plaster gets really messy. The facts about Ancient Egypt that are in the booklet are nice, but if the child is familiar with the subject, they are very basic, interesting conversation starters though.
In total a great gift for children that is fun and a great way to talk about Ancient Egypt. Also as it is in a nice box, it is really easy to gift-wrap.

this is good fun and although it takes a while to dig the objects out my 7 year old daughter didn't lose interest. good game at the end to play with.
