More About the Author

Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth where his father was a clerk in the navy pay office. The family moved to London in 1823, but their fortunes were severely impaired. Dickens was sent to work in a blacking-warehouse when his father was imprisoned for debt. Both experiences deeply affected the future novelist. In 1833 he began contributing stories to newspapers and magazines, and in 1836 started the serial publication of Pickwick Papers. Thereafter, Dickens published his major novels over the course of the next twenty years, from Nicholas Nickleby to Little Dorrit. He also edited the journals Household Words and All the Year Round. Dickens died in June 1870.

About the Author

Charles Dickens (1812-70) had his first, astounding success with his first novel The Pickwick Papers and never looked back. In an extraordinarily full life he wrote, campaigned and spoke on a huge range of issues, and was involved in many of the key aspects of Victorian life, by turns cajoling, moving and irritating. He completed fourteen full-length novels and volume after volume of journalism. The magical opening scenes of Great Expectations draws heavily on his own love of north Kent which he had known as a boy and in which he lived as an adult.

The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, Barnaby Rudge, A Christmas Carol, Martin Chuzzlewit, Dombey and Son, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, A Tale of Two Cities, Our Mutual Friend and The Mystery of Edwin Drood are also published in the Penguin English Library.

Penguin have brought out a range of 100 'colourful classics' which I utterly fell in love with. What a wonderful way to bring classic literature back into the forefront of young peoples interests; they caught my eye from the window of every bookshop I passed.

Great Expectations is my favourite book and I love owning it in this gorgeous cover. Ive bought three more since and am loving reading classic books that I may never have thought to pick up before. The collection looks beautiful on my shelf :)

Once you get used to Charles Dicken's style of writing, you enter the imagination and wit of a genius. Dickens paints masterpieces with words; you live and breathe the times. Great Expectations is a tale of love and deceit. It also introduces us to one of Dicken's greatest characters in the shape of the tragic Miss Haversham. Persevere with the style of writing and enter the world of a brilliant story teller.

I love Dickens and am pleased to see it's on the Year 8 reading list at my friend's son's school.

This is for his forthcoming birthday.

I'm sure he'll enjoy reading it.

The 'Faithfull@ Spray and the Book - Great Expectations - Were everything that I anticipated.
The 'Lighthouse Family' CD, however, is not as good as I hoped it would be. That is due to me being over optimistic when purchasing the disc. I had heard a couple of the songs, which I liked, and hoped that the others would be as good.
Unfortunately they weren't.
