I first read Great Expectations 40-odd years ago, and with great pleasure, but gave up on a number of later Dickens novels because of their
longueurs. But having recently acquired the new Tomalin biography of Dickens, I thought I should refresh my memory of this author before beginning it.
I re-read A Christmas Carol, since that was seasonal, and found it even better than I remembered. I can understand why people (and Dickens himself) wept
when he was doing his famous public readings of this. Far from being sentimental, it's very close to the bone.

Great Expectations too is surpassing my memories of it. Children make good readers of Dickens, but perhaps advanced years make for even better ones.

Just a comment on the Everyman's Classics in general. They are all beautifully bound and printed on best quality paper, making them a pleasure to read and handle, and a handsome addition to my bookshelves.
