Reviews

Star-studded adaptation of Dickens' classic novel. As a boy, Pip helps escaped convict Magwitch (James Mason) when he encounters him on the moors. Later in life Pip is taken to the home of the wealthy, eccentric Miss Havisham (Margaret Leighton), where he meets the beautiful but cold Estella (Sarah Miles). When Pip is subsequently informed by lawyer Jaggers (Anthony Quayle) that a mystery benefactor wishes him to be brought up a gentleman, he assumes that Miss Havisham is responsible - intending him to eventually marry Estella. Following an expensive education in London, Pip - now a man (Michael York) - returns to his childhood home, but the expectations he holds of his future are soon to be confounded.

A thoroughly enjoyable production of Great Expectations full of stars such as Michael York, Sarah Miles, James Mason, Margaret Leighton. Sarah Miles is great fun as Estella and Margaret Leighton suits the part of Miss Havisham superbly. Perhaps not the most accurate adaptation of the novel, but one nevertheless which is heartwarming and very enjoyable - thoroughly recommended.

It's been about 30 years since I last watched this film and it was every bit as good as it was to me when I watched it the first time. I prefer this version to the John Mills one but then that is probably owing to my age! A lovely period piece that was a pleasure to watch.

This should have been a reasonable production with such stars as Mason, Miles and Leighton BUT it is not! The very opening of the thing with its crass musical score should be warming enough. As Chris Covenant states in his review: " . . . lousy sets, unconvincing performances". Just so.

(THE FILM):
This lavish adaptation of Charles Dickens immortal tale follows Pip, an orphan given the chance to break free from poverty and live life as a gentleman. The stunning performances by an all-star cast are unforgettable.
James Mason is Magwitch, the escaped convict Pip helps in an act which is to affect his whole life; Robert Morley plays his kindly uncle; Anthony Quayle is Jaggers, the lawyer who intercedes for Pip's anonymous benefactor; and the rich but deeply troubled Miss Havisham is deftly portrayed by Maragaret Leighton. Estella, the lifelong object of Pip's love, is Sarah Miles and adult Pip is played by Michael York.
Good adaptation of the Dickens classic, for TV movie made in UK in early 70s it is more than Respectable..

I loved the last adaptations of Austen and Brontë by the BBC.
GE is my favourite book by Dickens.
I was thus looking forward to discover this so called "gem".

I did not like this adaptation. It has no rhythm, no energy, no passion.
The cast is a bit weird : they took a young Pip but no young Estella and the meeting of the young boy with the so-called young girl is more than unlikely.
The directing is flat, academic. The whole thing is average, not very interesting.
