Original and Clever 26 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
The Great Elephant Chase by Gillian Cross is a children's novel set in America in the early 20th century. It follows the friendship between Tad, a young boy from a small town and Cissie, the rightful owner of the Indian elephant. The story is exciting and interesting throughout (although no strong themes) as the children attempt to transport the huge elephant across the country to escape Hannibal Jackson, who stole the elephant for his own corrupt purposes.

I enjoyed his book as it had original and clever ideas, a strong plot full of adventure, and well developed characters. Highly recommend to children.

Magnificent 29 Nov 2010

I'm 15 Years old, and this is another one of those books I just can't help but read again and again:

" 'I'm not going to wait around and let Mr Jackson steal my elephant.'
Penniless and parent less, Tad and Cissie are on the run from the tyrannical Mr Jackson. But hiding an enormous elephant is no easy task, and Tad realises that he must find courage and determination if they are ever to reach their destination - a proper home on the other side of America."

I was literally enthralled by this book. The imagination used is incredible - as they are reduced to smuggling an elephant on to a barge! This imagination and witty humour, is accompanied with the tense atmosphere. You don't know if Mr Jackson will ever catch-up, and there are some heart stopping moments when they nearly get caught. This is a captivating piece of literature, and I would recommend it to either sex, and any age group. I believe it can quite easily have the same effect on you as it did on me - I just hope you're brave enough to find out...

This is Gillian Cross at her best. A wonderful and engaging adventure involving a girl, her elephant, an orphan boy and the man who wants to take the elephant from them. Crossing 2000 miles of 19th century America, this is a grand chase well described.

The book won Whitbread and Smarties awards. The latter involved children voting on the short listed books, so it is clearly a children's favourite. Gillian Cross is a tremendously versatile author, who has written many books that I have liked very much in a variety of very different settings. This one is very much recommended.
