Books on dinosaurs have generally arranged them in terms of their classification or according to when they lived. This major new book looks at dinosaurs from a historical perspective, from the earliest scrappy finds and best guesses of the early 1800s to the spectacular key discoveries that changed people's minds and brought dinosaurs alive in the public consciousness. Key finds for each century are examined in chronological order, with information about the dinosaurs themselves interwoven with accounts of their actual discovery and the extraordinary scientists and explorers who found them. On this fascinating journey, we come back to the same sorts of dinosaurs more than once as new discoveries changed ideas on their appearance, biology or behaviour. The amazing new dicoveries in China and South America in the last few years are fully documented, as are the major new finds of the 21st century.

Great to look at, enjoyable and informative to read. Darren Naish updates and shows us many supposedly well known discoveries afresh and also covers the scientific emergence of some less well known and recently described dinosaurs (Eotriceratops for example). Think you know all about the earliest dinosaur discoveries? Think again.
It's not a dinosaur encyclopedia, doesn't pretend to be and is the better for it. This book focuses on a selection of particularly important and interesting discoveries - revealing how and why some pivotal fossils moved our understanding on, whilst also showing how major ideas and interpretations have developed over time - and puncturing some myths along the way. Written by someone who is comfortable with technical language, but intended for those who may be less so,the text is accessible without dumbing down - but precise and detailed where it needs to be.
I was initially doubtful that `yet another' dinosaur book targeted at the non-specialist audience could really bring anything new to a subject already awash with books - but for me, this one does.
Sure, someone somewhere will find the odd error no doubt, and others may disagree with some of the author's interpretations or inclusion choices - but that in no way detracts from the overall quality of this book. At Amazon price, great value. Apparently a lot of material didn't make it into the final print, a real shame but maybe - volume 2?
Darren Naish takes a different look at dinosaurs in this great new book. His novel approach (the clue is in the title) is to show some of the key discoveries of dinosaur fossils, and to explain the way these discoveries changed scientific understanding of these perennially fascinating animals.
This approach, rather than pouring scorn on the way our forebears "got it wrong", explains just why they thought the things they did, and puts their views into a framework of evolutionary science that itself has evolved over the past couple of centuries.
The book never talks down to the reader, being unafraid to use technical language where appropriate, and yet is accessible to the layman (such as myself) with only an amateur's understanding of the topic. All in all, I can't recommend it highly enough!
